Would you Watch Superman Returns Director’s Cut?

I actually didn’t mind Superman Returns as much as most people seem to. I admit there was some weak moments and the plot is basically a remake of the first Superman film.

But there is a group of intrepid fans trying to petition for WB to release a version cut by Bryan Singer’s vision of the movie. Now petitions are about as effective as asking Uwe Boll to stop making movies but it is interesting to consider it.

Latino Review says:

The website SupermanReturnsTheBryansingerCut is asking fans of the film to sign a petition to get Warner brothers to release the director’s cut of the film. I know a lot of people didn’t like Superman Returns so they won’t give a crap. But I’m always down to see the movie the director wanted me to see.

I would be willing to give a chance to a Director’s Cut of Superman Returns.

Here is the clumsy fake trailer the enthusasts put together with some of the concept art and speculate on what a Singer Cut would look like.

I know a lot of people didn’t care for Superman Returns, and its far from a perfect movie. But what if the Singer Cut made it feel completely different? Obviously he wouldnt be cutting out things like Superkid, so that you would still have to deal with.

Could this change the feeling of a Superman Reboot?

  1. I think Returns was pretty much the “Singer Cut” to begin with. He was the one who cut off the IMAX back to Krypton scene, and now we’re never gonna see it since it was in 3d and can’t come on DVD except if they worked a way around it…and that’s about the only scene i wanna see…

  2. haha no you guys just like the idea …but if it came out really would u go see it in the theatres?
you would be stupid too cause u would still come out with the fact that the movie had nothing going for it other then routh.

    1. Directors cuts are not released in theaters. They are released on DVD/Blu. No one would go see it in theaters because the majority of the film was there and if they were inclined they would have seen it the first time.

  3. Brian Singer is one of my favorites directors. Superman was the only movie that i didn’t like so much, so yes i want to give a second chance to this movie with a director’s cut. I still trust good directors like Brian more than studios.

  4. I don’t understand what exactly a director’s cut would consist of. In this trailer they mostly show footage from the deleted scenes on the dvd which add absolutely nothing from the movie. What was the concept art at the beginning supposed to depict? Is Singer himself not satisfied with the final cut?

  5. While I did not mind Supey Returns, and I would much rather the series move on and find a clever way to get around The Kid issue (there’s several ways)- in other words not reboot– even if there was a “director’s cut” I don’t think it would influence a reboot or continuation from Returns in any form.

Should ‘the fans’ want a Director’s Cut and WB puts it out (they still could, if a double dip or new collector’s edition could milk out more money out of you)…it won’t tilt any scale.

Which brings me to another matter. Love it, like it or hate it…how long was this film again? 154 minutes? Call me nuts, but I kind of get this impression that the majority of what we seen in the film is 99% of what was shot. I’ll give the 1% to the 15 minutes of deleted bits which nobody really missed.

  6. Honestly, I don’t think a re-cut of the film is going to make a big difference. There’s no way they can fix the fundamental flaws of the film (one of the least talented actresses I’ve ever seen cast as Lois Lane; boxing themselves in with a Kid Superman). They can just make a new one, ignoring the fact that this one exists.

I agree — the film wasn’t quite as bad as its reviews. There were some good things about it. I thought Brandon Routh was a compelling Clark Kent/Superman and would be happy to see him again, even in a rebooted Superman that ignored everything that happened in Superman Returns (which it should).

However, a Director’s Cut is not going to fix the movie’s serious flaws or somehow save it, unless they want to cut out Lois Lane and her fiance entirely, as well as their kid — and then Superman lifting up the entire Continent of Kryptonite….

  7. I would totally watch a director’s cut if it were made available. Not because I’m a fan of Superman Returns, but in hopes it might be better than what we were given. I don’t have a lot of faith it is…Superman Returns looked pretty and had some nice moments, but on a whole was not a good movie.

  8. while i was a little disappointed with the movie i still have it in my collection and i would love to have see a directors cut put out and i would upgrade to it .

  9. I for one always fantasized in my head for a Superman movie since my childhood days even before Nick Cage was actually considered for the part. But when I came out of the theater after watching Returns, I still felt empty, like all those days of waiting and collecting set news was amounted to almost nothing. Yes, It had its moments, the credits with the iconic music, the airplane scene, it was something exclusively related to Superman, and Superman alone, but like Rodney said, it was only a remake of the Original Superman… I, being born in the 80’s and raised in the 90’s can never see Luthor as a campy mad-scientist with hired goons, and I’m sure many would agree with me. So, long story short, the director’s cut shouldn’t make much of a difference since he didn’t have much of a vision when there was a World (read: Apokolips) of possibilities out there.

  10. As long as it’s a different cut and not just 2-3 deleted scenes added in with no real different perspective from the directors cut… Donners was really good and was a complete version..same movie but different.

and I as well think nothing but the best of Spacey, BUT he sucked as Lex Luthor. and Parker Posey was just annoying in that movie..Brandon Routh did Supe’s justice and his best Christopher Reeve impersonation. and the love of the source material was apparent through out the film.

    1. Yes, but that was a whole ‘nother ball of wax.

      1) They could make money off it

      2) Donner’s Superman II footage was found in a vault (aside from footage that was already seen in Superman II)

      3) It is intended to be an entire different film than the Richard Lester cut.

      4) Donner was screwed over in Superman II to begin with.

All those elements came together to make the Superman II Donner cut, as there was curiosity and public demand.

This is an entirely different ballgame than “Singer’s cut” of Superman Returns.

  11. I would love it! Superman Returns is fantastic! Minus the kid. Plus Bryan Singer is a rockin’ Director and I’d love to see his original Donner influenced vision of the film.

  12. I actually hate to say it but I think Superman Returns was not a good movie, actually far from good. I did not buy Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, though he is a great actor. And what the hell was Kal Penn[Epic Movie] doing in this film. Anyways, I actually liked Brandon Routh as Superman, so I don’t want a reboot of this franchise. I want the next one to be better.
