James Cameron to get Three Awards for Avatar?

James Cameron is getting a LOT of attention for the upcoming Avatar. The film has been long in the waiting and we are close to the finish line with mixed results over how big this film is, and is going to be.

And now he is getting awards for it.

Cinema Blend says:

even before the Oscar nomination process really gets going, there are smaller awards bodies that are taking the Avatar hype to the bank. Director James Cameron will be receiving three awards for Avatar over the next month, according to Variety: the New York Women in Film and Television Muse Award, the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s modern master award, and the Visual Effects Society’s lifetime achievement award.

Its like Spaceballs! The movie can come out even before its made!

But honestly the Visual Effects Society is not giving Avatar the award, but rather Cameron himself. Avatar’s hype might have something to do with triggering this honour, but it is Cameron getting it, not the film.

I am confused as to just what qualifies James Cameron for the NY Women in Film and Television Muse award. He inspired a woman in TV or Film? And likewise, the Santa Barbara Film Festival Modern Master?

Are they just making up awards now? I thought that was just for the commercial that is the MTV awards that give out category awards like “Most Anticipated Film with Iron Man in it” awards.

I am not saying James Cameron doesn’t deserve recognition, but some seem a little too vague to be proud of.

  1. I still think this movie is going to tank! Now when I say tank i don’t mean that this movie isn’t going to make a LOT of money cause it probably will, I mean that this movie probably isn’t going to break what they spent on it.

  2. Hm, Gawker had a post on an interview with Cameron (in Playboy) where he talked about the challenge to create perfect CGI boobs. Maybe it’s for this astonishing achievement?

    1. Ripley, Sarah Connor in Terminator, Helen Tasker in True Lies, Rose in Titanic… He always goes for some pretty strong independent female lead characters. Avatar it will be Zoe Saldana.

    2. “I guess its his role in turning Ripley into a scifi action heroine.”

Not true. Ripley was always a strong female lead to begin with. Besides, I really hope that that’s not a criticism, because it was the action element that made Aliens so intense in the first place.
