Will there be a Sequel to Watchmen?

As a rule, in Hollywood if a movie makes a pile of money they make a sequel to try and get another pile of money. Comic book movies have broken the stereotype and while sequels tend to pale in comparison, this genre has offered up some of the most successful sequels ever.

So with Watchmen coming out this weekend, if it turns into a wild success (I think it will be modest) will Hollywood push for a sequel??

Yahoo says:

“There’s no way I would be involved in a sequel or prequel,” said director Zack Snyder, who turned the graphic novel “300” into a 2007 blockbuster.

“Will they make one? I have no idea how you would. The work is the work. This movie is about ideas. Anything else you would do, if you did a sequel to it, misses the point entirely of what ‘Watchmen’ is,” he said.

I think Snyder hits it right on the head. The movie is about ideas. Despite some strong characters, the movie focuses on the ideas behind them instead of the characters themselves. Once the idea is explored all we have are some characters that likely wouldn’t stand up on their own. Sometimes a story is just a single tale. It doesn’t NEED to be expanded upon.

Highlander said it all. There can only be one. And in the case of that franchise there really should only have been one.

I do find it interesting that Zack Snyder would be saying things like there is “no way I would be involved” after he was rumoured to be waiting on Miller’s sequel to 300, another story that really had no need for a sequel (and even less likely to make sense if they did)

If they are that eager to bring more of Miller’s work to the screen, I would LOVE to see Ronin. Don’t bother with trying to make sequels where there doesn’t need to be.

Just don’t let him direct.

  1. it was a cool movie but it did’t give me wut i needed2 feel like they should make a sequel and imma big comic book fan i still have the first spawn still in the plastic never opened since i was10 and im 26 dc never did have exciting characters(my opinion) but there were a few i liked but marvel always made you want special abilities who dont wanna be a marvel creation like blade, wolverine, hulk, spiderman, captain america, silver surfer,fantastic4,daredevil.andthe list goes on they need 2 step their game up put the good characters out like flash or the justice leage or maybe green lantern(any1 agree)these are just my opinions on how i feel on watchmen and dc comics because they could have done better

    1. Trappdarippa, it is lame to try and use a separate screen name seconds later to agree with your own comment. We can tell immediately that “sikwun” is also you.

So horrendous grammar aside, you obviously miss the point of Watchmen. It has nothing to do with the characters, but their situations. The characters are secondary to the story. Watchmen is a tale of ideas and circumstance.

This is not an issue of Marvel Vs DC, but rather a totally different type of superhero story. Its not for everyone, but you cannot judge all of DC’s properties by comparing it to this movie.

  2. Why not a Sequel or prequel! The movie left me wanting more. I wanted to see more crime fighting, action and interaction between the main characters. The comic book is good but there is so much more to do if they so chose. You guys are a bunch of elitist snobs on here. There is plenty to explore and create. In the right hands it could be a lot better then the original. It does not matter if there is no source material, there are capable people out there that can do it. But I would be surprised if it will make enough money. I do not think it has enough cross over appeal and it will have a big second week drop.

    1. I have no interest in seeing the Watchmen turned into a standard superhero movie. Their characters are not nearly as interesting as their personalities.

Watchmen is as incredible as it is because it is a story of ideas, not of hero conflicts.

  3. If not a sequel, then a prequel might pretty interesting. Does anyone agree that watching the watchmen fight crime possibly may be interesting?

  4. ok i take it back. I saw a tv spot last night which is the best trailer or any kind for this film have seen so far.

It will have a huge weekend….Maybe not 70 million but still the ad ruled. It will be big.

  5. Snyder already said there won’t be a sequel and there shouldn’t be. It’s not a continuous story and no material to base it on. It would just be to make money and the movie would then suck.

  6. They should leave it be. They know they are already going to milk us the 2,3,4,5 and 6 disc anniversary releases when it comes out on DVD and Blu-Ray over the upcoming years.

    1. Sequal=Wrong way to spell sequel.

Just a pet peeve of mine.

And they could always justify it with “we wanted to make more money”

Doesn’t mean it has to be good or worthwhile. If they figure enough people will see it, they will make it.

  7. This movie cannot be made into a sequel. There just isn’t the source material or “ideas” as Zach Synder stated. If a sequel were to ever show up, christ hollywood really has become a shameful business. Also, a 300 sequel… rumours, everyone loves rumours, but would would the sequel be 600? I mean really it won’t happen… I hope

  8. And my prediction on box office mojo was $68.9 M, and it’s average prediction on there is 68 M, i think it could pull 300 M here in the U.S. if something miraculous happens, I just cannot see it failing on opening weeked

    1. i might have to eat my words but hey it wouldnt be the first time…but here goes

there is no way that this movie will have a 70 million dollar opening weekend.

    2. but let me clarify my statement..i hope it does incredibly well. i am not being a “hater” i hope the film is great and kicks ass i just don’t see this film, having the crossover appeal needed to make that kind of money.

  9. Yeah, but it’s not a sequel or prequel, it’s a story inside the graphic novel. I can’t fully explain because it’s complicated, but long story short, it’s a a book inside of Watchmen that comes up on a lot of pages of the novel

  10. Let’s wait and see how much of a success this movie is… I’m predictin a 40 to 50 million opening and a final 120 million, but that’s just my prediction.

    1. Buff, what you are ordering is the comic book that was presented AS a comic book one of the characters in the book was reading.

They made an animated direct to video version. Its a pirates tale that is within the story, but really has nothing to do with it.

  11. There’s no way in hell that it’ll get a sequel, if it did, the sequel would suck because nothing really allows a sequel, and the material, there is no second graphic novel, it would be an epic fqail, and I don’t think they will even try this

    1. Oh, you know they’d try it. Look at 300. It made a ton of money and now they have to find some way to make a sequel. Even if the sequel has nothing to do with the original aside from one or two characters, they’ll explore ways to make one. I’m not saying that one will get made, but if this one makes money, they’ll try. Hell! They’re probably already talking about it.

    2. You can’t really compare a hypothetical Watchmen sequel to a hypothetical 300 sequel. What about 300 suggests that a sequel would be impossible? So you’ve lost all but one of the entirely one-dimensional main characters. There are plenty more battles they could stick the narrator into, or they could even do a prequel and keep Leonidas, etc. As long as it has the same visual style and action sequences, no-one will care about the narrative, just like no-one really cared about the narrative of the original.

    3. They have been rumouring about a 300 sequel since it came out almost 2 years ago.

It isn’t happening. At least not yet.

I don’t doubt they would try, but they would be better off making more Miller stand alone movies like Ronin.
