Daniel Craig Turns Down Thor

Daniel Craig Shirtless 2The scoop lords over at IESB have let us in on some saucy news! It appears capitalist commander Sanchez has found out that Daniel Craig turned down the role of Thor! Peep this !!

IESB asked if Craig was interested in doing something a little different character-wise, like Thor? Craig said no, he turned it down and laughed about it.

Sanchez continued, “seriously, I heard the folks over at Marvel had you on a short list to be Thor.”

Craig said yes they [Marvel] did approach him but he turned it down. He added jokingly, it would have been too much of a power trip, both Bond and Thor, and running around with long hair and a hammer.

May your laughter turn to locusts that eat for face Craig! The thunder god will not be scoffed!

I am glad Craig turned down Thor, I like him as an actor but I can’t see him in a winged helmet holding an Uru hammer. Brad Pitt on the other hand, is man that was born to wear a winged helmet. I just wish he was taller, but platform boots could save the day. Thor wore pretty magnificent boots and building them up would certainly work for both practical and aesthetic purposes.

Would any of you have like to see Craig as Thor? I like him as James Bond but am glad he passed on this one. If any of you disagree with me, I would love to hear your reasons why or even alternate casting choices.

  1. I can see a lot of suggestions which really talk about who ‘looks’ like Thor…has to be ripped, has to be tall, has to be blonde.
What about ‘has to have a commanding screen presence and really sell the whole idea of Thor’?
That means someone who does more than just look the part.
Brad Pitt looked very buff and all in Troy? But somehow that really wasn’t enough. He looked as if he’d just walked out of a modern gym and surely thats not the point.
Whereas Crowe, in Gladiator, was able to convince everyone he was this great Roman General and all round killing machine and spout lines about ‘Unleashing Hell’ without anybody doubting him for a second…let alone wanting to laugh. And he’s 5′ 11. But so what? Who watching that movie ever thought so? He seemed like a giant.
So, cast an actor who can do physicality like Crowe and that will be the best….and I think thats what Brannagh will do.

  2. HEIGHT DOESNT MATTER

the height can be changed with a computer

i doubt that ron pearlman (hellboy) was 8 feet tall
or that hugh jackman IS that tall
and im sure all van damme movies had him standing on bricks

i hardly doubt marvel has even put any thought to this height dilema

  3. Personally I trust Craig’s judgment in movie calls. There has not been a role that I feel he did not nail. He hit the spot in Power of One where he played a nazi youth that beats the shit out of Stephen Dorff, he was phenomenal in Layer Cake, and he has blown James Bond out of the water. You might bring up the Golden Compass or Invasion, but I liked both of those even though they did not really earn all that much acclaim. Sure he turned down Thor, but had he taken the role he would of nailed that too.

  4. @ P-MAN, what’s your point? You sound somewhat personally upset by Craig not being interested in this role?

Half of Craig’s films have been low budgeted independent features and non box office bait anyway. I’m sure he’s content enough with his career and salary that he isn’t *soley* motivated by attaching himself to whatever potential ‘box office hit’ that comes along.

  5. Alan Ritchson has the body, but he doesn’t have the acting chops for the character. …If they could figure out a good way to use his physical appearance and get James Earl Jones to do the voice acting… well, then we would have an amazing Thor.

    But, voice overs never work.

I don’t want to see Brad Bitt as Thor at all. I think he is a SHIT pick for this role. I’d rather see Matt Damon in the role myself.

FUCK IT! Just get NATHAN JONES to do it! Don’t have Thor speak at all… make it a film with no words and just has Thor running around and kicking ass on shit…

In case you don’t know who NATHAN JONES is:

“I am so glad he turned this down. Thor has the real potential to be down right laughable”

I know what you mean… And the way I see it, same goes for Captain America. You can only have these guys in their element when they’re put in their own universes and timelines. As much buzz as the ‘Avengers’ movie is getting… I don’t see it working.

I mean, a skinny doctor who has the ability to turn into a ‘Viking God’? Doesn’t really strike me. But a ‘Viking God’ in a magical and mystic universe of it’s own (much like Conan the Barbarian you know)… That’s cool right?
Now I’m SURE, that what I’m about to say will definately piss someone off, but a modern day Captain America is just… Ridiculous.
I mean, does America really need a modern day hero to keep their spirits up during these tragic times? No. The whole concept would have a nasty, political vibe to it…
As a WWII hero? I don’t see the problem, as long as they keep him frozen till the end of time. Hell, they could even give it more stylish look in the spirit of 300 and Sin City…

  7. I am so glad he turned this down. Thor has the real potential to be down right laughable, and he isn’t a big enough to survivor the career hit if it is. Seriously, Thor is a marginal comic book character with a fringe fan base. They can definitely make this cool, but if I’m Marvel, this is not the character to invest much in, too big of a gamble.I definitely wouldn’t invest BRAD PITT money for Thor. Keep dreaming Doug.

I think this would be a great chance to debut an unknown. I think the sight of some A-lister in a winged helmet and tights will insight more jokes than intrigue.

  8. Thor needs to be a magnificent physical presence. Daniel Craig couldn’t pull that off. They need someone really tall, really built and with more personality.

Basically, they need another Arnold, or at least some amount of intensity like Gerard Butler had in 300.

  9. Dear Mr. Craig,

You have one, count it one major hit as a leading actor. Granted QOS will probably make tons of money as well. So, I’ll give you two hits. Both as the same character. You are not Tom Hanks, Harrison Ford or Will Smith, with a string of hits under your belt. As such you are not yet considered a box office draw. Until such time as you are considered a box office draw. It may be wise to not turn down roles as the lead in movies that will almost assuredly make well over $100 million.

  10. You would be in shock, Doug, that I was one of the few who wished for Craig to be Thor.( and I can back that up, by the way) I am apparently l am also one of the few who *don’t* want Brad Pitt for the role. The only reason Pitt’s name even comes up is in part due to ‘Troy’.

As for the charge of an actor should not play two iconic characters…horsepucky. Harrison Ford had Han Solo, Indiana Jones, AND Jack Ryan. You have Robert Downey Jr. who just got done playing Iron Man…now he’s Sherlock Holmes.

Height is nice, BUT it’s not a requirement. The powers should be should get the best actor they can get- and even though Craig shot it down, it should be a plus that they even considered him.

As to who is next….like I said…I am not hoping for Bead Pitt, but honestly? After Pitt, there may be nobody left…unless…

    they get…
    they get…

Roland Kickinger? Yes, that’s right. They get Roland Kickinger and surround him with seasoned actors! If you are going to hire Kickinger to play young Swartzhenegger, if McG brings Kickinger on to resembele an early T-800..I say go all the freaking way die his hair blonde and give him a big ass hammer.

  11. WHO THE FUCK WOULD SAY NO TO THIS?!

    whats WRONG with him?????!!!!

im i crazy? im i the only one that thinks its LUDACRIS to turn down thor? and whats his face turned down WAR MACHINE!

“oh no- haha..sorry..i wont have time to do thor…ill be waay too busy playing internet backgammon and watching its always sunny in philadelphia to do that…”

the only way i would ever turn down thor is if i BECAME a god like thor and therefore had no time to be in these awsome movies

  12. Alright, official comic book geek here. According to Marvel, Thor’s actual height is 6’6″. Like BJON86 said, if they can make Elijah Wood look like he’s 3′ tall, they can EASILY make Brad Pitt look like he’s just a few inches taller. Did you see Pitt in Troy? Fuckin’ BADASS!!!

  13. ya know, Doug, the thing is…nobody can ever say “this actor” is a bad choice or “that actor” would be great because the thing is, you never know. You never know. NOBODY wanted Craig to play Bond! People were like “this is fucking ridiculous!” “He’s not Bond!”. And now look what people are saying: “He’s the best Bond ever!” Ridiculous.

People underestimate what a studio and a production crew are capable of. Especially nowadays. They can turn a decent actor into a great actor and make an audience believe that he IS the guy.

Oh and the height of an actor doesn’t matter. If they can produce Hobits on screen, I’m pretty damn sure they can make Brad Pitt 6’9″. No need for special boots.
