X-Files 3 Direct to DVD?

The rule of thumb with the Hollywood Machine is that if a movie makes a lot of money they make a sequel. If it bombs, they wont (but sometimes they try anyways) but if it sits somewhere comfy in the middle, we get a Direct to DVD money grab.

Well it seems an X-Files 3:I Want to sell more movies, is being considered – direct to DVD.

Movieweb says:

Dread Central received word from an insider that plans are in motion for a third X-Files film, although it would probably go straight to the video shelves.

I was never a big X-Files fan and never got sucked into that show. However I do know a pile of people who were, and even they didn’t even bother with X-Files 2.

So is there enough interest in this to justify a third movie? Is the newly hot again Gillian Anderson that hard up for work?

Would you be into an X-Files 3?

  1. I think the second film was a good film but it would have faired better with an october release.Should still make a profit with foreign release gross and DVD release.A third film should definately be made for theatrical release with a more science fiction/alien theme which would allow for the special effects that is the main attraction for younger movie goers.

  2. I have to agree with what’s been said by some here: the creators of the new X-Files movie had told fans over and over again that this would be a stand alone-like movie, not something that covered the mytharc.

But many complained that it was too much like a stand alone X-Files episode. It’s amazing how people just don’t pay attention no matter how many times you inform them of something.

If they come out with a direct to dvd movie it will be the first of it’s kind that I will watch and buy. Chris Carter created a great series, every bit as good as what Tim Kring, Jay Abrams, Cuse and Lindeloff are doing but he did it before them. I have no doubts that a third movie will be good. But I’m sure the actors wouldn’t be involved. They’ve gotten too respectable these days.

  3. oops!

I liked IWTB. I’ve watched the series since 1993 and loved a lot of the MOTW episodes. This was a good stand-alone episode. That’s what we were all promised. I would like another movie and not 4 more years to wait, either. I feel that the wait really hurt this movie. Imagine if it had been released in 2004 or 2005. Then, we could have had a third installment (mytharc, probably) now and another in a couple of years. Maybe Chris Carter should have refrained from suing Fox and delaying this whole process. A six year wait since the series end didn’t help this film out, nor did the summer release. A winter release would have enhanced the atmosphere of the movie.

As for a third installment, sure, I’d like one, but do we really have to wait FOUR more years!?

  4. Its one thing to say you THINK it will suck, but you cant say it DOES suck when you haven’t seen it.

No matter what Ebert says I am not interested. But that doesn’t mean it sucks.

  5. The belief that a movie will suck even before you sit in the darkness of the theater and give it a chance. Sad. Roger Ebert described the film (which he liked very much by the way…) as a “good old fashioned thriller, the type we haven’t seen in years.” I’ll side with Roger on this one. When (and if…) they get around to it, I’ll check it out. I also agree with Henry as well as his thoughts mirror a lot of us. He’s not all hopped up on Mountain Dew!

  6. I like the TV-show X-files very much but not the movies. I haven’t seen the new movie yet but I think that it will suck. :( A third movie will probably suck too. :(

  7. @Padthai – uh, what about Californication? Let’s see, high ratings, critically aclaimed, Golden Globe for best actor. Yep, I’d say that’s pretty much a hit.

I’m sorry but to me so many people just want the same old crap regurgitated over and over again with endless amounts of CGI and mind numbing special effects. It’s no longer about the narrative, it’s about aural and visual stimulus. How hideously boring.

So many of these “blockbuster” movies are just the same as the last one. They’re all clones. There’s your Clone Wars for you John. Who can outdo who at the box office.

    Whatever happened to good storytelling?

  8. Momus, your previous post was deleted not because of your opinion or your link but the insulting way you chose to present it.

You can post the link to continue discussion on the story without violating the commenting rules you were encouraged to read before you post.

If you used a real email address I would have been able to tell you this without posting it here.

  9. X-Files 2 just wasn’t the movie that X-Files fans wanted to see it wasn’t shitty by any means and while I won’t go as far as to say that it was anything that good I will say that it was decent and it’s problem is that it comes off more like episode rather than a film.

That’s the problem with X-Files 2 is that it’s more or less another episode rather than something epic that couldn’t be done on TV and it needed to be a movie.

I still think an X-Files 3 would work and be fairly successful but it needs to be a grand story and not another story that’s something that could have been told via TV.

  10. I loved X-Files 2. Sure, it wasn’t AS good as it could have been, but I still enjoyed what we got. I’ll look forward to a third movie, no matter the medium it’s released in.

  11. The movie was well done, sorry if there weren’t enough special effects for the legion of fanboys. Anyone with any knowledge of the “stand-alone” eps appreciate what Carter and Co. put out on a $30 million budget! It fell into the category of “Quiet Horror” by the way….Charles Grant, H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Bentley Little, etc…
Hammer films wrote the book on doing a lot with less (“Horror of Dracula, etc…)
The Hulk had a huge budget and although I did like it I felt something was off a little, same for Indy 4.
The film dealt with serious issues that don’t lend themselves to elaborate effects-driven product. If the next one is a Direct-to-DVD I’ll check it out.

  12. I would be in support of some direct-to-DVD sequels. It isn’t hard to imagine those becoming popular. They should have been doing those for years now! The X-Files DVD seasons still sell pretty well so I figure this would be a good movie in resurrecting the fan base and maybe even bringing in some new fans!

  13. Well, I don’t know what the hell Carter has been thinking about with this series for some time….maybe $
I loved the show, but it ran too long. The last two seasons were really not that great, they should have ended the series when Duchovny wanted to quit. I think this movie is really just an extension of that, Ididn’t hate it, but it wasn’t good. It kinda’ reminds me of Murder She Wrote now that Mulder and Scully are outside the FBI. I guess they will travel from town to town investigating “the Darkness”
I guess if you think about it, minus millenium, everything else Carter has done has not been very good, neat ideas suffering from bad scripts…too bad I had high hopes.

  14. Gillian Anderson is hot up for work??
Why didn’t you say David Duchovny?
He has never had a single hit after X-Files left. And his latest movie, The Secret, went direct-to-dvd.
A direct to dvd series starring these two actors will never happen. They will never agree to do something like that.
