World of Warcraft Trailer Online

Before you get all your 3 day old lucky raiding boxers and cheetos in a bind, this is the cinematica trailer for the World of Warcraft Game Expansion due out later this year. Wrath of the Lich King.

I love how the narrative is of the noble king and father of Arthus who is passing his wisdom on to his son. In the game storyline, that son is decieved by demons to take up Frostmourne, a sword that taints his Paladin upbringing and makes him into a servant of an evil undead sorceror. Eventually he becomes the Undead King of the Frozen Throne. I’d love to see that story told in film.

Even back in the good old days of Real Time Strategy games like the original Warcraft and Starcraft, the animated sequences between levels were something to raise an eyebrow to. I always wondered why they would restrict themselves to just games when they can produce segments as amazing as this.

The planned World of Warcraft movie has been hopping about limbo like a lost puppy for a while now. First confirmed by Legendary Pictures in spring of 2006, we heard that it would not be attached to the current game lore. Then later it was said to be a prequel to the events in the game.

I think it should have some sort of tie to the game canon. If ever there was a video game movie that had potential NOT to suck, World of Warcraft could be it. However, I think instead of the planned live action epic, they should really do it animated.

I’d sit through 90 minutes of THAT!

  1. Although the animation might be good in the warhammer vid, the story, as it were, at the beginning was actually badly written. I was also a little surprized, like Rodney, that the final “beast to end all beasts” was a vulture. :)

It is so much easier to choreograph battle scenes than what Blizz did. Blizz pulled pieces in from the story we know of right now, and hinted at what’s to come, leaving our imaginations able to play out what might happen next. No, it wasn’t anywhere nearly as exciting as a battle sequence where gonmes are turned into sheep, (which we all love to see!), but it was FAR more deep and evocotive.

Blizz has built this game around a huge base of lore, which can be fascinating to follow. It is what makes the game as rich as it is. Even for those who don’t care about the lore, it still surrounds you as you play, and is what makes this game as addicting as it is… it makes SENSE, as opposed to a bunch of parts thrown together because they are cool.

  2. I hope no one will compare Blizzard CGI animation with Paramount’s Motion-Capture rendition of Beowulf. Blizzard has been in the animation business for a long time and now that they receive $15 per month from 9 million subscribers (I would say 7 million since most bums have 1 or more accounts) from WoW alone, I would take the educated guess and say that they would have enough currency floating around to open their own film-production studio and conjure some stunning visuals for your senses; the amount of detail they spend on lore and music isn’t half bad either. That would be at least 5 million tickets sold for any movie they came up with, especially if you get a free in-game item for your ticket stub or in-movie game code.

Even if their pockets weren’t deep enough for one movie, I would bet my W,A,S and D keys that they would receive numerous phone calls from those that would love a piece of that Acti-Blizzard pie. But then again, why burden yourself to make the world happy on the silver screen when you have Starcraft II and DIablo III making an appearance in the next few years.

  3. and oh ya…haha aint no one killing arthas any time soon….you will have many other encounters before they even introduce his lair …..so atm i havent heard much about what it takes to get to him…..if u go to old durnhome then book it to south shore..u will see some of the key players in wotlk

  4. ya i stopped playing my main bigsampson a while back…i sometimes cruise around on him…..ill tell you what death knights are lame…..every one and there mom has one….all good cause like i said i smash on them….one thing i love about this new exp is that they brang back the lich kings temple again..havent been in the new one yet but should be fun…kinda sux that blizz made a super awesome dungeon that only 10% or less have ever seen…so its good for new players….and i havent had time to get gold so no new super epic flyer boo hoo…always fun with new exp on any game…..but i got to say that im on the guild beta of WARhammer and that game has some few tweakings needed but the classes are way better configured then wow….but ea has had crap online gaming so we will see.

  5. @Bee – I understand why it is what it is. And for what it is, it is great. I just expected something different.

I agree that the fight has to be something special, and I expect nothing less. Major lor fights in WoW are always epic and get better as the game goes on. I can only imagine what it will be like to fight the Lich King.

@Rodney – Sadly, it’s already been said that this is it. Well this one, and the original in game announcement trailer.

Also, a cool little tidbit. Once we get to Northrend in game, there will be a huge whole where that dragon was raised from.

  6. @ PUDIE

I would say the reason for that would be the other expansions and the main plot were set up, this expansion is considered the end of an era so to say, as the main plot points of Warcraft 3 begin and as this demonstrates will end with Arthas.

My only hope being a fan of the warcraft 3 story is they give him a better send off deserving of the character rather than a bunch of nobody heroes ganking him

  7. As a big fan of the game I have to say Im a little disappointed. It’s not that it’s a bad trailer. It’s technically amazing and it’s a good set up for the expansion. But it doesnt go with the other WoW cinematics. The other ones were a mix of races and classes battling out and showing cool little class abilities in CGI. So anticipating this one, I was expecting more of that, along with seeing a CGI Death Knight besides Arthas. I wanted to see the WAR of Warcraft.

  8. BigSampson… you so leet!

I just dinged 70 myself. And I have been playing since launch. lol

I just dont have the time to play as much as I would like but its a fun distraction.

Now if I could just get more badges of justice…. sigh.

  9. beta lvl 80 dwarve warrior ….so u like warcraft do ya….well if your not a warrior prepare to get your asses handed to ya cause TITANS GRIP is the next level buddy……haha i hit for 12,000 easily boooyaow….oh ya for those who dont no TG is duel wielding 2 handers……i will smash on u orc fucks! hahahaha.

oh btw there is a lot more going on with blizzard then talks about the movie…..from what i hear from friends that work over at blizz in socal there are plans to add a lord of the rings style movie that has to do with old school characters…i heard a pally and it wasnt arthus…so ya there you have it….if u play the game you can figure out who the bad ass pallies where in the story line.

  10. Odin’s raven… that dragon was incredible.

Blizzard has always had a knack for filling usually what amounts to five or so minutes with mountains of story, as this demonstrates so well.

I know it will probably suck, but god please let the real movie be half this entertaining.

  11. Meh. He is a troll… The automated service deletes it anyways.

He is wasting his own time proving how childish he is instead of wasting our time. lol

Let him spam. He isn’t doing anything!

  12. @Sean Dailey

totally agree with u man! the 1st resident evil came would have translated GREAT into a movie (minus so of the terrible dialog). To bad they changed everything and fucked it all up.

As for World of Warcraft there is PLENTY of backstory to make a great movie. Shit u take into account Warcraft 1,2 & 3 and there is even more story. With all that it could even be made into a trilogy ala LoTR.

  13. why does everyone think that games with great cutscenes and art direction even need to be turned into movies? it’s as if they aren’t valid in their own right as an art form.

more time and energy goes into the average game than most movies yet they still get relegated to “kids stuff.” i think that’s why most video game to movie conversions are terrible because the people involved don’t treat the source material with enough respect.

the resident evil series would have made great movies if they had just been re-created as is instead of the crap that made it to the big screen.

  14. that was super-awesome-cool.

    @Rodney
“I think instead of the planned live action epic, they should really do it animated.” – I totally agree, Blizzard is more than capable to do it. Always loved those cinematics.

  15. I’m not a fan of games turned into movies but that was fantastic! I would love to see this turned into a quality animated film. Even a live action one would be great if they took the time to give it care like what was done for the LOTR films.

That was impressive and I don’t even play WoW.

  16. As someone commented early it takes Blizzard huge amounts of time to create a trailer like this, but it also costs millions of dollars. Millions of dollars for 4 minutes will never be justified by a production company sadly. I wish Blizzard had the numbers to animate their games into movies because it would be an amazing group of films, unfortunately, we’ll just have to pray this live action one can entertain.

  17. I agree Rodney, the cut-scenes for Blizzard games have always been awesome both in the quality of the animation and the dramatical direction. No other game company comes even close.
Consider however that they spent months (if not years) doing this 3 minute sequences. It would take them a decade to make a real movie at that rate.
But I agree, if there ever will be a WARCRAFT movie, and with the massive success of the games I’m sure there will be at some point, animation is the way to go.
Unlike LOTR the WARCRAFT world is much more fantastical and overpopulated with strange creatures everywhere. They would have to use massive CGI anyway, so why not animate the whole thing? Do the BEOWULF in WARCRAFT, that’s what I would watch.
