DC and Warner Hold Discussions

Dc-LogoTrouble in paradise! It looks like WB and DC have entered talks to discuss the direction of future comic book adaptations. We get the following news from our friends at comingsoon:

Both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety are reporting that Warner Bros. Pictures is holding new meetings with DC Comics to discuss a new direction for its film adaptations. What is assumed by the trades is that Warner/DC are feeling the pressure with the success of Marvel Studios bringing its many characters to the big screen. Here’s the statement released by WB:

“While we are not going to go into the specifics of the meetings, we’re constantly looking at how best to exploit the DC Comics characters and properties. DC is an incredibly valuable asset to Warner Bros. and plays an important role across the entire studio by providing development and franchise opportunities for all media, including films, television, home entertainment, animation, consumer products, video games and digital platforms.”

It sounds like the WB is in some shit from where I sit. DC is no doubt looking on with envy as Marvel plans to do crossovers with their own characters, within their own production house. The bean counters at DC must be considering a similar move and are no doubt concerned at the current red tape that will hurt the chances of quality crossovers. When this meeting is done, I wouldn’t be surprised if DC either decides to end their relationship with WB or just demand a much bigger piece of the pie and more creative control.

Comic book characters have become a pop culture pantheon, and now we are enjoying their exploits in ways I wouldn’ t have even imagined possible as a child. CGI keeps getting better and I start to cry a little bit when I consider the types of advances that we will see 20 years from now. People have a hunger for these heroes and the box office is where we come to worship.

May wisdom guide DC’s decision, there is big money to be made, for who knows how long. Right now WB is drinking their milkshake, they’re drinking it up!

  1. Hey Doug

Yeah they merged a while ago, my hope is this meeting might try to set up a DC Flims divison inside WB studios to handle the comic book movies.

  2. Warner Bros. owns DC so I don’t think DC could break off if they want to. What DC has is that all their movies are Warner Bros so that don’t have to worry about their characters not being part of the same universe, but that may have hurt them because they could stick all their characters in a movie right away while Marvel has to buy it’s time since some of their characters are with different studios. Other than the Batman and V franchise, I think Warner has dropped the ball on the DC properties.

  3. This can only bring goodness.

I just hope they both agree the movies they have been churning out (besides new batman) have been below par and they need to do something to ensure they compete with Marvel with the quality of their future movie productions especially Superman.

And get the movies done right!!!

  4. I don’t think DC could end their relationship with Warner even if they wanted to.

    But they SHOULDN’T want to.

Do you guys realize how desperate the comics industry has been lately? Some of DC’s most acclaimed titles have sales figures so low that they’d be canceled if they were published by Marvel or another independent publisher. But the Warner Bros. safety blanket prevents that. And when these series are collected into trade paperbacks, Warner’s relations with book publishers helps on that front as well.

Yeah, the problem is with WB’s movie people, which DC and Warner Bros as a whole both must be pissed about. But I doubt there would be much of a comics industry left if DC and Warner separated, because I can’t see DC holding its market share without the extra resources that Warner Bros provides. They haven’t been providing those resources well enough, but they still open way more doors from DC than DC could ever open on its own.

  5. Unfortunately no matter how bad us fans or the people over at DC wish that this could be handled with competence, we’ll always be stuck with WB because they own DC comics. Thankfully we still have the DC Animated Universe, as for the live action films, I’m not holding my breath on enjoying anything but Batman,
