Warwick Davis talks Willow 2

With the growing trend of aging actors returning to play older chapters of their chracters (Rocky/Rambo, Indy, Die Hard etc) in sequels LONG after their last chapter, it was only a matter of time before other roles were considered.

The Original WWW himself, Warwick Davis hasn’t been forgotten in Hollywood, but now he speaks out about the possibility of Willow 2.

MTVMoviesBlog quotes Warwick:

“I would definitely greenlight a ‘Willow’ sequel. So many people ask me about that. Every day people want to see another movie,” he said. “I’d be very excited for it, because I was 17 when I did that movie and to go back and have another chance at the character now. I’ve learned so much more, it’d be great.”

In point of fact, there have been three “Willow” sequels already – each written by Chris Claremont from a story by George Lucas. They form what is known as “Chronicles of the Shadow War Trilogy,” and their reception…well, people hate them. A lot.

At first impulse, I was ready to file this under “celebrity talking to get people talking” then it occurred to me that this guy isn’t exactly in that desperation category yet. Nearly every role that requires someone under 4 ft in Hollywood that isn’t in an Austin Powers flick goes to Warick.

So its not Warwick’s ability that is in question. Its the content.

Presumably if they did a Willow 2 it would have something to do with the books, however considering how poorly they were received if they did do this I would think they would consider a whole new story. But should they bother?

I kind of place Willow in that “leave it alone” category. You know, the category Highlander should have been in?

This is a classic. It stands alone nicely and still holds up despite its dated special effects. It is an epic tale beautifully told.

I think this is just talk for the sake of talking. But this is how some things start. Do you think more of this story needs to be told?

  1. it is 10/19/2010 , i am a 28 year old writer and a movie fanatic. i just finished watching willow , and it has been a while since i’ve seen it. Willow was one of my favorite movies as a kid , and watching it today brought back all the same feelings for the movie that i felt when i was younger. i havn’t read any of the books but im going to pick them up today. i think a Willow sequal is a stupendous idea , and with a new generation of viewers a second movie would bring a whole new audience to the original. the movie must be done right though, and stay true to form , with the original cast , a few new characters , and the same feel that the first movie had. it should feed heavily off of the first movie and continue from where Willow left off. i believe the new generation needs a new Willow movie and with all the crap out today a well writen Willow 2 is just what the theater loving masses are craving!!!
P.S. It shouldn’t be called Willow 2 it should have another title.
p.s.s. also , it should not be based on the books from the comments i’ve read. Killing off Madmardigan and sorsha would be a horrible idea in my opinion.

  2. I think they should make a willow 2. Call it Willow 2: Bavmorda’s Revenge or The Revenge of Bavmorda. Summary: an evil sorceror brings bavmorda’s evil soul back from the 39th demension and in order for her soul to stay they have to put it into a decendents body, so they kidnapp Sorsha and now Elora Dannon, willow and Madmardigan have to save her, but after they do they find out that Shorsha has a younger brother that was taken by the dad and now they have to get to him before the evil sorceror does.

  3. I HAVENT READ THE FOLLOWING STORIES BUT A SECOND WILLOW MOVIE WOULD ROCK!!!!!!! I DONT THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO KILL SORSHA OR MADMARDIGAN THOUGH.

  4. Definately a Willow2!! I love the original still to this day and my four year old now enjoys it and want more! Nothing wrong with more of something good:) It won’t ruin the 1st one .. come on it’s great! and something worthwhile to watch with kids these days than all this other garbage

More Warwick as Willow!!! He’s acting experience has grown so much it’d be great to see

  5. I loved Willow even after all these years, especially Val Kilmar (hot). I have read the sequals to Willow by Chris Claremont, in fact I own them. I am not in the majority I guess because I love them totally, yes its depressing that Madmardigan and Sorsha die in the prolog, but the stories are awesome.

I think if they worked it carefully they could totally do a movie off of them.

  6. Well I agree that Willow was an excellent movie, but i don’t agree to leave it alone, i say why not make a sequel the way it should be made to atract young people in to using thier imaginations. True the books were little to be acknowledged, and were to predictable, thats why I say hey, let some young writer liven it up, and only use a couple of the original lead characters and set them off on a whole new adventure to be for-told over and over again, like the chronicles of narnea.

  7. I love Willow, but I am in the camp of leave it alone.
I tried reading the first sequel years ago and couldn’t finish it. I tried so hard, but I didn’t like it. I barely remember the story anymore just my dislike for the way the story was unfolding. Man, I haven’t even thought about that book in ages, lol. It is one of a small number of books I put down and never picked back up.

  8. ” They form what is known as “Chronicles of the Shadow War Trilogy,” and their reception…well, people hate them. A lot.”

Considering that in the first book, Shadow Moon, half of the characters from Willow die off, I’m not surprised. But it’s a huge error on MTV to suggest that the books didn’t sell. which they did. Besides, I could have sworn in a recent interview Lucas was considering returning to the Shadow Moons in a possible TV series?

It should be noted in Shadow Moon, seventeen years have passed since the events of the first film. If a sequel were made now, and Warwick was called, he could do the part age wise, and it would be just fine.

But Rod, you are still right. Willow should be left alone. Hey, I love Blade Runner and Blade Runner had book sequels and a video game too. I don’t hear anyone rushing up to say ‘hey, let’s do another ‘Blade Runner’ film!

  9. Oh man I loved Willow. Ron Howard did a great job with that movie. I would say go for it. Bring back as much of the original cast as possible. Bring back as much as the original crew as possible. Bavmorda may of had more than one child?
