Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – No “2”

I was already scolded like a disobedient child for refering to the Batman sequel as Batman: The Dark Knight – Its just “The Dark Knight”, and now I find that calling Bay’s Transformers sequel Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen is wrong now too. They are dropping the 2.

ComingSoon says:

While it was previously “announced” as “Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen,” Superhero Hype! has learned that DreamWorks/Paramount has opted to make it Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen instead.

One thing that bothers me about movie titles in sequels is when they change the pattern. So when the sequel comes out, you are establishing the pattern. Make up your mind now and don’t change it. If you want to put a 2 there, then the third movie has to have a 3. Not a subtitle. Not like Rocky 1,2,3,4,5,Balboa.

So as much as I don’t like them taking the 2 out, I actually prefer a subtitle instead of the 2. It adds a little more imapct to the movie instead of just sayin “here’s another one”.

So for Transformer Fans, would you sooner see it just be Transformers 2? Or do you like the longer title?

  1. They drop the number due to the simple fact that there isnt the time gap in between each movie. All these types of superhero movies dont have ten years in between each movie allowing them to drop the digits and give them cool sounding sub-titles!

  2. I think numbering and a subtitle is best myself. The subtitle always expresses what the movie is about, so when you think back to a film you know which one ‘Attack Of The Clones’ or ‘Return Of The Jedi’ is.

But a numbering system helps fans later in the films life to know what order they go in, simply and easily. Say when you’re buying a bunch of films, or are watching them for the first time. It also just shows a clear progression.

Yeah, numbers and subtitles are the best IMO.

The worst system is whatever the hell they did with Rambo.

  3. Yeah drop the 2.
(Revenge of the Fallen) sounds good, but let’s just hope the film is.
    I have my doubts.

On Rambo, for most of the shoot the film was going to be called , “John Rambo”. Then Sly changed it….?
I think “John Rambo” works better when you see the ending. At the end he’s kinda reborn (IMO).

I remember when “Attack of the Clones” was picked by Lucas as the title for Star Wars 2, I thought that was the lamest title I ever heard. And then we get Quantum of Solace and the all time worst title so far 2008, Terminator Salvation, the Future Begins.
    Ah boy.

  4. @Phil – I think it just falls under creative license. You call your movie what you want to call it. There are no rules you have to use the same title with a number at the end for sequels.

I think it would be a boring place if all sequels were simply MyMovie 2 and MyMovie3 etc.

They likely just do it to be different, or match the feel of the movie, or just because the sky is blue. I don’t know.

  5. I understand what you’re saying Rodney but i’ve never really understood it since everyone is just going to call it Transformers 2. I’d love someone on the site to write an article on why studios seem to be so adverse to numbering their sequels these days, and try and help me understand it.

  6. I enjoy when the name of the story is tagged on to the overall series title (i.e. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc).

Either way is fine, as long as they stick with one. The Rambo series of films was a disaster in naming…..

First Blood, Rambo: First Blood part 2, Rambo III, Rambo

  7. I like a little bit of both. Nothing wrong with the way it was first announced. Made me think of the x-men movies, which I liked. Switching it up like this though makes me think of how I remember the original Star Wars movies, with SW as part of the title, and then the name of the story tagged in as well.
