Trainspotting Sequel Locked Up

trainguys.jpegAlright you fucking cunts! It looks like a sequel to Trainspotting is on the pegboard to be made, (although not anytime soon). We get the news and plot synopsis from the WEBMASTER OF SENSUALITY over at Filmjunk:

Looks like the rumors of a Trainspotting sequel are picking up again, with director Danny Boyle recently confirming that he has secured the rights and that all of the actors have agreed to return. The sequel to Trainspotting will of course be based on Irvine Welsh’s follow-up novel Porno, which takes place ten years later. Sick Boy tracks down Renton to help him fund a high-end adult film, meanwhile Begbie is out of prison and seeking revenge.

Trainspotting was a movie event I remember well. It was beloved by my circle of friends and we saw it a few times at the cheap theater on St. Paul in St. Catharines On. It is a great movie about addiction, friendship, and urban hooliganism and for some reason always reminded me of life on the streets of Welland.

Seeing these characters interact 10 years on is a brilliant idea. Having them try new and more adult scams is fitting and hilarious. There is a danger of ruining the magic of the first film with a shit sequel. However with all the same players involved and the film based on the novel that was a sequel itself; i am a little more trusting. I may have to read the book in preparation for this one.

  1. It is definately worth reading the book – I thought it was fantastic. It would also be worth reading Glue which is one of Welsh’s best works to get some background info on the brilliant character ‘Juice’ Terry who is one of the main characters in Porno.

  2. Steven, you’re correct. From the extensive touring and interviewing Boyle has done for ‘Sunshine’ (an excellent film btw), he’s said author Irvine Welsh has basically given him first option on the rights, Boyle’s just waiting till everyone grows up… however McGregor has said on more than one occasion that he’s not interested in reprising his role as Renton.

I certainly know that Boyle has made numerous public and private apologies to McGergor.

I would be gutted if he really didn’t come round in he end, let bygones be bygones and get on with it. I can see the rest of the cast signing on, fingers crossed Ewan will make the right decision. It just wouldn’t be right without him.

Kudus to Boyle for doing the right thing and sitting on the project, waiting for the right time.

  3. I’d be sceptical about a sequel. When Trainspotting came out it really captured everything about the 90’s in one film. Especially the soundtrack. Like Doug said it could ruin the magic of the original if its shit. Having said that, I saw Sunshine the other night and it reminded me of what a great director Danny Boyle is. The man has integrity and doesn’t need a cash in sequel. I also can’t wait to see Robert Carlyle back as Begbie. Has anybody ever seen a more realistic bogeyman? Bring it on.

  4. Here’s a question: how would you categorize ‘Trainspotting’? I work in a video store that still has actual VHS videos, and this one is always getting lost. I would have put in Drama just as a default. I actually found it in Comedy, but it’s listed in the computer as (get this) Action.

    Go figure.

  5. Wait, so does this mean Ewan McGregor will reprise his role? I clearly remember (2003) his relationship with Boyle & Co was pretty rocky and he wasn’t that enthused about doing a sequel.

  6. just wanted to say that i read the book porno almost 3 years ago and i just have to say it was great, the characters grew and it was just great diferent situation more mature like and if dany is directing what can go wrong

  7. I was eventually able to make my way through reading “Porno” and I have to say, I don’t know if I really enjoyed the story as much as I did for “Trainspotting”, I was, at first, excited to hook up with these familiar characters, but over time I don’t know if I cared about them anymore.

Of course the movie may change that.

The fun part is riding the TTC (subway) with a picture of a big blow up doll face titled “Porno” on the way to work.
