Keira Knightley is finished with Pirates of the Caribbean

kiera.jpg Keira Knightely is walking the plank willingly as she swims away from Pirates of the Caribbean, the new installment At world’s End will be her last pirate movie. The folks over at cinematical.com give us this:

The very talented and exquisite Keira Knightley was interviewed this week by the UK’s The Daily Mail while on the set of her latest film Atonement.

Among other things discussed during the interview was her work on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise films. In the interview, she said definitively that her most recent appearance as the tough but beautiful Elizabeth Swann in Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End will be her last because she wants to move on to other kinds of films, as well as more adult roles.

“I’ve been playing this girl since I was 17,” said Keira in the interview. “I’m 21 now and I’m onto very different things, but it’s fun to try to invest Elizabeth with some rebellious spirit.”

This is a smart move for Knightley. If she had stopped at her last appearance in the Pirates franchise that would have been even smarter. Her character is not integral to the plot, she is obviously board to death playing the damsel and has been since the second film. I have a feeling that her lack of enthusiasm will continue to show in this fourth installment and do nothing good for her.

Kiera Knightley’s career is approaching a danger zone right now. She is no longer new. She could disappear in a few years. It happens all of the time. The film industry tends to tire of pretty pouty faces so fast, the girls are pushed aside, left to fade like a sunset on the water, leaving nothing but fond memories of their beauty behind.

I like Knightley, she’s very up front in interviews, and she knows how to play a strong character for young women to look up to. Also she chooses varying roles so that she can grow as an actress. The fact that she stayed with her Pirates character this long surprised me.

If she is able to get more strong roles over the next few years then Knightley has a fighting chance. But she will still have to swim hard to avoid being pulled off to sea by Hollywood’s strong undertow.

  1. sounds like someone got a huge ego. She should just remember, before Pirates, she was nothing. Hardly anyone knew here outside of the UK. Keira may think shes all the shit now, but to be honest the only good films ive seen her in is Pride and the Predjudice and Pirates. I think all of her other films are just either crap or OK. Even though Depp is the main one who attracts most of the fans, Knightley should just remember. Without Pirates she’d be nothing.

  2. Obviously nice to look at, but she could have easily been replaced in PoTC by several other rising starlets. Her acting was forgettable, Depp is the entire franchise there.

  3. she is the most painful actress to watch “act” in years. Every single thing she does seems false and phoney. I have yet to see her good in anything or give a performance that resembles anything real. I almost have to look away when she is on screen. She is an appalling actress and without her looks she would not be anywhere because she sure as hell cannot act.

  4. Seymoure,

    >> I personally think she wants more money… Remember Toby almost got axed for Jake Gyllenhaal for the Spider-man character.

Toby Maguire’s potential replacement wasn’t about money. He was suffering serious back problems from filming Seabuscuit and was in agony doing the wirework required to film Spiderman.

  5. Personally I find her to be a very annoying in front of the camera I can’t stand her character in Pirates of the Caribbean. I also thought that her nomination for Pride and Prejudice wasn’t deserve I don’t see much acting talent in her except for pouting her way through things.

  6. She better take what she can get, and be grateful. This chick couldn’t sell water to a well. She certainly didn’t sell me on Domino. I personally think she wants more money. This is usually what the actor/actress say when they what more money. Remember Toby almost got axed for Jake Gyllenhaal for the Spider-man character.

PS: I can’t separate Keira from Natalie Portman. It’s unbelievable how similar they look.

  7. Pride and Prejudice is her best flick. Seriously, she is amazing in it. I’m a big fan of this girl. She seems like she’s got her shit together, and as long as she doesn’t fall into a Lohan/Hilton trap, she’ll be fine.

A sandwich wouldn’t kill her, though. Damn, she’s thin.

  8. As long as she continues to make fairly wise career choices, I believe that Knightley will be around for years to come. As for her talent, check out ‘Love Actually’ and ‘Bend it Like Beckam’ for two excellent performances before she became a household name.

  9. I agree with Charles on this, but I have something to add as well.

“Kiera Knightley’s career is approaching a danger zone right now. She is no longer new. She could disappear in a few years…she will still have to swim hard to avoid being pulled off to sea by Hollywood’s strong undertow”

While I didn’t care for the part, didn’t “Domino” count? While I was a huge fan of “King Arthur” is was mostly due to other actors, the storyline/concept and the battle scenes. Personally, I couldn’t strongly disagree more. I don’t think for one minute Knightley will either vanish in a few years in a Hollywood shuffle. That is regardless of whether or not she goes for “adult” roles or not. If she were to wind up being another Brit who can change accents, look out.

    And even if she didn’t…

  10. >> “Her character is not integral to the plot”.

That’s like saying you could have Moby Dick without the bloody whale.

Try removing her from the plot and producing some semblance of the same film. Every event in Pirates 1 and 2, and I strongly suspect in 3, would. not. happen. without her character’s presence in the story.

    >> “She is obviously bored to death playing the damsel”

    Define “damsel”.

    SPOILERS

    In POTC 1, Elizabeth:

Singlehandedly negotiates the survival of Port Royal with Barbossa.

Lies to the whole skeleton crew when she poses as a Turner.

Swats a skeleton in the face with an oar – *and* simultaneously takes a smart jab at her entire society – “That must’a hurt…” *SWAT!* “Try wearing a corsette.”

    In POTC 2, she:

    Confronts Beckett at gunpoint.

Forces Beckett, still at gunpoint, to validate a Letter of Marque.

Heads for Tortuga *all alone* to find Will

To get to Tortuga, stows away disguised as a man.

Commits some of the most Machiavellian treachery in the history of film when she tricks Sparrow into confronting the Krakken.

You can’t seriously consider those the acts of a “damsel”.

Can you provide some specific examples that illustrate the term, and some plot points that don’t hinge on her existence?
