Dave Callaham defends Doom screenplay…badly

Doom.jpgI have to come clean. According to the open letter from Dave Callaham regarding the screenplay of Doom, I am:

nothing less than shoddy and irresponsible

I don’t think he was talking so much about my post, this site, but more about the abuse he’s received from big time Doom fans. Well, as Film Rotation report, I too felt really bad as I read the opening quote they contain from their letter. Read the next quote though and you are suddenly wondering why the hell he’s complaing.

Okay, apparently we may have quoted a source that was not accurate in his world location or attributation of the comments, but reading the letter it looks like the comments were right anyway and he goes on to say that:

The screenplay I wrote DOES differ in a number of ways from the games…we were never going to top Doom 3 anyway, and we all knew that. Instead, we have toyed with some elements of the game, and yes, I am pretty much solely responsible for that, since it was my pitch and my screenplay that got made. Let me assure you, though, that the themes and elements that you love about Doom are ALL represented strongly in the film…just with some new twists.

Then goes on to say:

I don’t enjoy watching a bunch of strangers bastardize my baby any more than you do, but really none of us can do anything about it at this point, so I hope that at least some of you will fret, with me, in the direction of optimism.

So although he hasn’t just listed what the changes are, he changed them for his screenplay and since then it’s been taken away from him and changed way more, to the point he’s really not happy with it and doesn’t think it’s what he wrote in the first place.

For me, I think the letter and what is contained does more damage to the idea of the Doom movie than the previous incorrect quote did. I would have just kept quiet, it now sounds like it’s totally ruined and even the writer is preparing to distance himself.

Doomed? Or should we really try and be optimistic as Callaham is, what do you think?

  1. Sadly, this movie will probably not be very good, and from the way things appear to be going will almost certainly not be a good doom movie. Seriously, this whole virus crap is getting old. It’s like they’re bastardizing the Doom name to re-release a movie plot that’s already been done? How can you go SO wrong when you have much good material to work with? Look at Alien vs Predator, Alien was a wicked movie, and Predator was sweet too, and the game was excellent; how can you so completly screw up a movie like that?

Are the people in charge of making movies retarded? Who keeps giving money to people making movies like Alone in the Dark, and House of the dead… did they not WATCH those movies? Uwe Boll is obviously being paid by SOMEONE, we should find them, and get them to give US money, its not like we could make anything worse than those two movies. Maybe they don’t care, and just want to make a few bucks, but don’t seem to realize good movies make more money.

  2. Strong and inventive? Is that what rolled the execs over? I’m not so sure. I think it’s more the immediate fan base available, the fact that this is the first story that Id let the studio take the movie.

Sure, the writer is probably someone great with a lot of belief, I have argued this point many times on this site before. He’s a creative that is trying to get the script he created onto the screen.

Let’s be realistic though, that hardly ever happens. Twenty odd rewrites, at least, with upwards of three screenwriters on it who may or may not be credited. Then there’s the Director’s interpretation of that script, not to mention the Producers and Studio’s changes during the process.

Check out the X2 DVD commentary for an insight into how much is changed from the first writer. That one worked out for the better, but the very fact he stood up and told us what his draft was and it is radically different to the Doom story we know, and not in a more exciting or complex way, more a Resident Evil way.

Then he admitted that other writers have come in and changed it even more to the point he’s unhappy with it.

I just can’t see any of that being good.

  3. Hey. This writer pitched an interpretation of a storyline that was strong and inventive enough for a team of Hollywood execs to throw millions of dollars behind.

Considering that they have been trying to make a Doom movie — but failing in the developmental stages– for ten years now, does it seem at all possible that his new interpretation of the story might be a better bet than the several dozen failed attempts in the decade past?

This writer isn’t a millionaire who greedily bought the rights of a script and then turned it into some vanity project. He is a young writer who pitched a superior idea and breathed life back into a dead movie.

  4. I can’t believe that people are having such a fit over this writer. This guy wrote a scipt. It didn’t have to be picked up. If you want to blame somebody, blame the production company, not the kid who wrote the movie.

  5. Doom is the greatest game ever made and then this c0k suking 27 year old University reject decides to take control of a movie which could be good and then change it completely into a remake of Resident Evil (pretty much)

He should burn in hell and the get raped by a Baron of Hell (ouch)

I really want this film to fail bad and they actually loose money

there shouldnt be less than a r-18 rating it is supposed to be Highly Violent and Scary anything less will not do.

a petition is up to change the movie heres a link
http://www.dmop.co.cr go and sign the petition if u hate this guy aswell

this is our game not his

  6. i really wanted to see this movie fail.

because i am tired of video games adaptations.
i think they should have given this to Uwe Boll.

and for the record i just want to state that DOOM sucks. suckkks bad.

i am happy with the direction this movie is going.

  7. True !
Why the hell give such a great project to a brainless 27year old child?? What do you expect!?! He had no real script experience whatsoever and to read the storyline is making Resident Evil 2 into a work of art. Not to mention that the DOP turned into a director Andrzej Bartkowiak, can’t really turn the tide. So for me, certainly with their pg-13 rating, into a straight-to-video popcorn flop.

  8. I think we should rip this guys guts out and eat them.

it really bugs me that some idiot liberal arts major hack can go and change everything i love about something because he thinks it is “his baby”.

what a load ot trash. what the hell makes it his?!?! IT IS MINE!!!! it is the fan’s, not this guy, there are 50,000 screen writers that could do a better job this this fool, then he gets angry at the fans, becasue they say his stupid ideas are stupid.

i am afraid he is the one that is stupid!

    haha! take that, jerk-face!

but serisouly, if you make broad changes to something with a huge fan base, what the hell do you expect? the fans to fall all over thanking you for cutting key plot elements that make the franchise what it is? why does he think he can do it to and bitch? why does he think we should breathlessly anticipate this piece of trash? becasue he got an arts degree from a community college?

i hope he burns in hell…with pinkie demons eating his fingers so he can nevr write again.
