Wild Speculation: Clooney as Doctor Strange

Let’s play a new game here at The Movie Blog. It will be called WILD SPECULATION where we will make an observation based on an internet rumour or information of our own that we just wildly speculate on with no basis in reality.

Why? Well just in case we randomly guess right, we want to be the first to say it, or at least chime in on it when we think its wrong! Its really just about bragging rights and more accolades that will never be useful in the real world.

So today, I tripped over a bit of news from /Film about some unrelated media hot shots all gathering for lunch. And we all know in Hollywood “lets do lunch” means “lets talk about something we can work on together”. But sometimes its just lunch.

George Clooney was spotted pre-holidays in Hollywood having a business meeting with director Ridley Scott, and Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel

So the speculation that was presented by /Film was that this might have something to do with the yet to be cast role of Doctor Strange.

Did someone say they overheard them talking about Strange? Nope. Did /Film claim thats what this meeting was about? Not at all.

Just wild speculation here.

That all being said, I would LOVE to see Clooney as Doctor Strange. I think he has the charm and presence that he could pull off the Sorcerer Supreme. So I for one would love it if this were in fact the case.

But then maybe they were all just hungry.

  1. actually the black president and the big guy from friday 3 would make a great cage…he is big as hell and he was actually better IMO then keanu reeves (which aint hard) in street kings………..i have sen him a couple times im actual acting roles and he is convincing…..i dont see clooney as the captain at all….never…not even when he was young…total differant persona’s……strange i can see totally…specially the training….i can see him getting pissy….how bout david carradine as his mentor…brain fart forgot his name….damn it…but ya dr stranges mentot haha.

  2. right
but hed still be a good doctor strange…although for some reason im sure they’ll pick a no name actor …not a george clooney

  3. You’d think the guy might steer clear of super-hero movies after he played batman, but then again I guess you’d have to judge each film & director on their merits & given marvels track record so far…

    nah, can’t see it happening.

  4. … I like the idea.

As has been discussed, he DOES fit the classic “image” of Dr. Strange, so long as hes weraing a goatee.

In addition, his personality is as such that he could make a very convoncing Strange, especially if they take an “Ultimate Universe” take on the good Dr.

  5. I think it’s MUCH more likely that he might be Captain America. And in addition, the time is nigh for that project to start. How about this…

    George Clooney as Captain America
    Brad Pitt as Thor
    Matt Damon as Ant-Man
Edward Norton as The Hulk (but mostly CGI)
    Common as Luke Cage
    RDJ as Iron Man

    Michael Wincott as Namor

  6. @Darka “Doctor Who?”

No… that is an entirely different franchise.

Doctor Strange is known as the Sorcerer Supreme – arguably the most powerful magician in the Marvel Universe.

  7. well him in black hair with a goatee wouldn’t be a bad doctor strange….and he’d fit the character good

this guy was also rumored to play ironman a long ass time ago (just like mark walberg) so we shouldn’t take these news seriously at all

  8. 1) Clooney could even be cast as Pym (Avengers 2011 or Ant-Man film) for all we know- but I have to go by what *is* known- that Clooney has pretty much sworn off comics related films due to the one film he was involved in. Yeah, the one with a robin in it. This may or may not rule him out as a producer or possible director, however, just actor.

    2) Ridley Scott helming Doctor Strange could be interesting- we know he could pull it off. Hell, Scott has talked about wanting to go back to sci-fi/fantasy for a couple of years every now and then (in fact, see point #5). Also, let’s not rule out Scott and/or his brother Tony being producers either.

    3) It should be pointed out that Sony had the film rights to Doctor Strange as of last summer (when the project was offered to Neil Gaiman and Gulluemo Del Toro) – so did the rights finally revert back to Marvel? Or are film rights still tied up by Sony?

    4) Before being Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange was…what? And you *still* want to cast Clooney? (wink, wink)

Now, for my judgement call **pay strict attention to the bolded**:

    5) Among the films Ridley Scott has on his plate is “The Kind One” and… “The Forever War” , based on the Joe Haldeman novel. Scott has been after this for 25 years and recently just got the rights to it as of last October.

The Forever War had also a graphic novel adaptation drawn by Mark van Oppen back in the late 80’s. Not much to do with Marvel, of course, but that does not rule out any involvement from Marvel -who could make good on the ‘branching out’ idea – and/or perhaps David Maisel was simply there at lunch discussing the graphic novel based on Forever War.

Oh, a name Hollywood director waits 25 years for the film rights to a project and just drops it at the drop of a dime for Doctor Strange?

    Rodney, int’l friends…

    George Clooney as Mandella

    Think it over.

  9. Urgh on the casting and on Paris Hilton.

I’m totally for an older actor getting the role, but not Clooney, that doesn’t feel right at all.

Scott is an interesting choice of director, though.

I’d like a great actor who doesn’t get huge roels all the time.

Tim Roth, maybe. He’s already wet his beak in the superhero genre, albeit as a villain. This would be a great role for him.
