AFI’ S Top Ten Of 2007

Afi1-1People love lists, and I have one for you! The AFI does not have a winner but simply releases a list of what they consider to be the top 10 per annum. The list is made available to us thanks to the mysterious caves of Yahoo:

“No Country for Old Men,” the oil saga “There Will Be Blood” and the legal drama “Michael Clayton” were among critical favorites that landed on the American Film Institute’s list of the year’s 10 best movies.

Also on the AFI’s list, released Sunday, were the jewel-heist story “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead,” the stroke-victim tale “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” the road drama “Into the Wild,” the pregnancy comedies “Juno” and “Knocked Up,” the animated rodent comedy “Ratatouille,” and the sibling comic drama “The Savages.”

I must admit, there are a few films I still need to catch on this list. From what I have seen – I have no complaints. I consider the AFI lists to be some of the most valuable out there when it comes to film, and consider their top 10’s as handy guides when looking for rentals from yesteryear. I would have added Beowulf to the list, I can tell you that right now, and Enchanted as well. I will need to see all the films however before I deride the AFI for not including them. I love Beowulf more than most and consider this film a must own when it appears on DVD. We swam for five days!

What about you guys? Any films missing that you would like to see on the list? Are their any films on the list that you feel should be smitten from it?

  1. One word: ZODIAC

Just goes to prove that critics have the memory of a gnat. You can have the best movie ever made – but if you release it anytime before November, it will never appear on any ‘best of’ lists.

  2. Kristina, I appreciated the film but it actually wasn’t one of my favorites. Not of this year or of Herzog’s career. I’m just surprised / saddened there’s not more of a push to see Herzog recognized. Although usually I’m perfectly ambivilant about awards.
Have you seen doc about Dieter? It’s fantastic. That is one of his best films. And he’s made some good ones.

  3. I’m surprised “Rescue Dawn” isn’t getting more end of the year love. I’m probably naive but I expected the Oscars to jump at the chance to give Herzog an award but it doesn’t even look like he’s in the running. It seems like he’s universally recognized as the greatest living director (is Bergman still alive?) and there wont be another chance to nominate him anytime soon.

  4. I’ve seen seven of the ten movies (haven’t seen Blood, Savages, or Diving Bell yet) and I’m pissed that Michael Clayton is on this list. What a steaming pile that was.

Anyway, I’d replace Michael Clayton, BtDkyD, and the rat movie with Gone Baby Gone, Waitress, and Rescue Dawn.

  5. I loved “Juno” and I am recommending that film to everyone I meet, so I am glad that made the list.

I would include “I’m Not There.” the Bob Dylan biopic(?). In my opinion it is the best film (I’ve seen) in 2007. The most fascinating piece of film making I’ve seen in years and Cate Blanchette was just brilliant. Time to pick out your gown for the Oscars Cate!
