Dwayne Johnson is addressing the conversation surrounding the Moana live-action remake. As the film prepares for its theatrical debut, the actor is pushing back against claims that the adaptation arrived too soon after the 2016 animated original.
Johnson Defends the Adaptation
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Los Angeles premiere, Dwayne Johnson dismissed the idea that there is a mandatory waiting period for remaking animated classics. While some fans have questioned the timing of this project compared to other Disney live-action efforts, Johnson believes the core themes of the story remain relevant regardless of the gap between releases.
Johnson stated that he never bought into the idea that a studio must wait 20 or 30 years to revisit a story. He noted that the themes and values present in the animated version translate effectively when portrayed by real human beings, particularly regarding the journey of the young protagonist.
Cast and Release Details
The live-action Moana features Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui. He is joined by Catherine Laga’aia in the title role, alongside Rena Owen, John Tui, Frankie Adams, and Jemaine Clement. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 10, 2026.
This adaptation aims to bring the story of Motunui to life as the character voyages beyond the reef to restore prosperity to her people. The project continues Disney’s ongoing strategy of reimagining its animated library for new audiences.
