Star Wars and Marvel Finally Collide in Hope Assembles Comic Series

For decades, fans have imagined the wonderfully ridiculous possibilities of Luke Skywalker meeting Spider-Man, Darth Vader crossing paths with Doctor Doom, or Han Solo finding himself in the middle of an Avengers-sized problem. In 2027, Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm are officially smashing those worlds together. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Wars, iconic characters from the galaxy far, far away are heading to Earth-616 for Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, a five-issue crossover that brings them face-to-face with Captain America, Wolverine, and other Marvel heroes.

The massive project is being written by Kevin Smith with artwork by David Marquez. Given Smith’s lifelong love of both comic books and the Star Wars franchise, it is easy to understand why Marvel handed him the keys to this particular crossover. Smith has been imagining this scenario since he was a kid reading the original Marvel Star Wars comics in the early 1980s.

This announcement is notable because it marks a rare, high-profile collision between two of the most significant pillars of modern pop culture. While fans have long speculated about such a meeting, seeing it officially sanctioned by both Lucasfilm and Marvel suggests a major effort to make the 50th anniversary of the original film a truly memorable event for readers.

How the Universes Collide

Marvel has not yet revealed the specific mechanics of how the two universes will merge. However, the series is expected to reimagine the events of Star Wars: A New Hope within the context of the Marvel Universe. This approach moves the narrative beyond the familiar confines of Tatooine and the Death Star, placing the Star Wars cast directly into Earth-616.

Michael Siglain, creative director at Lucasfilm Publishing, noted that the series serves as a love letter to both franchises. He emphasized that the collaboration between Smith and Marquez will allow characters from both sides to team up and battle in ways that were previously relegated to fan theories and hypothetical discussions.

Release Details and Expectations

The five-issue limited series is scheduled to kick off in January 2027. The final issue is slated for release in May, aligning with the theatrical re-release of the original film and the debut of Star Wars: Starfighter. You can find more information on the official Entertainment Weekly reveal or keep an eye on the official Marvel website for future updates.

While the concept is undeniably exciting, it remains to be seen how the distinct mythologies of both franchises will blend. Whether this results in a seamless, entertaining celebration or a jarring clash of tones, the ambition behind the project is clear. Marvel and Lucasfilm are clearly looking to make 2027 a landmark year for fans of both legendary properties.
