Gears of War Producer Discusses Expanding Game Lore in Adaptation

The landscape of Hollywood is shifting as more high-profile video game franchises make the jump to the big screen. Among the most anticipated projects currently in development is the live-action adaptation of the military shooter Gears of War. While the film is still in the early stages of production, producer Kelly McCormick recently shared her philosophy on how to handle such a beloved property, noting that the Gears of War movie producer believes that video game adaptations should “contribute” to game lore rather than copy it.

A Collaborative Ecosystem

McCormick, who is working on the project alongside director David Leitch, emphasized that the goal is to create a symbiotic relationship between the gaming and cinematic experiences. Rather than simply retelling the events players have already experienced, the production team aims to build a narrative ecosystem where the film and the games inform one another. This approach allows fans to feel a deeper connection to both mediums as they move between playing the latest installment and watching the story unfold on screen.

The producer noted that the team is making significant progress on the script and overall development. While she remained tight-lipped regarding specific plot details, she expressed excitement about the timing of the project, which aligns with the upcoming release of the game Gears of War: E-Day. For McCormick, the key is identifying intellectual properties that have vast, untapped potential for storytelling beyond what has already been established in the games.

Expanding the Delta Squad Origin

The upcoming film is set to serve as an origin story for the iconic Delta Squad. According to reports, the narrative will follow a group of soldiers fighting for survival against the Locust, a subterranean race determined to wipe out humanity. This premise aligns closely with the timeline of the new game, which takes place 14 years before the events of the original title and focuses on a young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago during the initial Locust Horde attack.

By positioning the movie as an extension of the game’s universe, the creative team hopes to provide a richer experience for long-time fans. This strategy reflects a growing trend in Hollywood where adaptations are treated as essential components of a larger franchise rather than standalone retellings. As the project continues to move forward, the focus remains on ensuring that the cinematic version of Sera feels authentic to the source material while offering new insights into the history of the war.

With the film currently in development at Netflix, fans are eager to see how this vision translates to the screen. The commitment to expanding the lore suggests that the creative team is prioritizing the depth of the world-building, ensuring that the adaptation feels like a natural evolution of the franchise rather than a mere imitation.
