TIFF 2026: AH GIRL – New Singaporean Film Makes North American Debut

The Toronto International Film Festival 2026 is set to host the North American premiere of AH GIRL, the debut feature film from Singaporean writer-director Ang Geck Geck Priscilla. The drama, which has already garnered significant attention on the international festival circuit, offers an intimate look at childhood during a period of family transition in 1990s Singapore.

Set in 1994, the story follows a seven-year-old protagonist navigating the complexities of her parents’ separation. As she moves between two households, the young girl finds a sense of agency through a secret chewing gum trade at school, a subtle act of rebellion occurring two years after the national ban on the product in Singapore. The film is shot in a 4:3 aspect ratio, a stylistic choice intended to keep the audience closely aligned with the child’s limited and fragmented perspective of the adult world.

The arrival of this film at the festival is a notable moment for international cinema enthusiasts. By focusing on the emotional landscape of a child caught between households, the project provides a grounded, personal perspective on family dynamics that often go unexplored in larger-scale productions. The film’s success at festivals like Rotterdam and Hong Kong suggests it is a compelling addition to the current festival season.

A Rising Voice in Singaporean Cinema

AH GIRL marks a significant milestone for Ang Geck Geck Priscilla, who developed the central character through a series of earlier short films. Drawing inspiration from her own upbringing, the filmmaker aims to capture the specific emotional weight of childhood. The production features a cast including Ong Xuan Jing, Sydney Wong, Doreen Toh, James Seah, and Carrie Wong. The film has already been recognized with the Youth Jury Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and a Best Actress win for newcomer Ong Xuan Jing at the Hong Kong International Film Festival.

Festival Recognition and Screenings

Beyond its upcoming premiere in Toronto, the film has maintained a strong presence at various global events, including the Shanghai International Film Festival, the Melbourne International Film Festival, and the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival. The project is produced by Charlyn Ng and Wendy Lie, with support from Aggregate Films, IFA Media, and Kusu Films. The film is presented in Mandarin, English, and Hokkien with English subtitles.

For those attending the festival, the film will have several screenings at the Scotiabank Theatre Toronto. The North American premiere is part of the Centrepiece program, highlighting the film’s status as a significant international entry this year. The film serves as a poignant reminder of how children process the decisions made by the adults around them, often through small, quiet observations rather than explicit understanding.

More information about the film and its festival run can be found on the official Toronto International Film Festival website.
