Power is everywhere in Fightland. Money talks, loyalty has a price, and nearly everyone seems ready to throw a punch. Some characters do that inside the boxing ring and some never need to lace up a pair of gloves to do damage. Then there is Joy. Played by Deborah Ayorinde, Joy stands close to the powerful people shaping this new world we explore. However, simply being near power doesn’t mean she gets to control any of it. When I spoke with Ayorinde about Joy’s place in the series, she found the perfect description for that contradiction.
“Kingsley has created this life for her that’s almost like a beautiful prison.”
Everything around Joy looks wonderfully polished, expensive, and extravagant. The problem is that it all belongs to someone else, they built it and others end up deciding what her life looks like. And Joy’s struggle isn’t something as simple as escaping a bad situation because we find a character who seems lost in herself. In our conversation, Ayorinde described Joy as someone who isn’t really free and that lack of freedom drives her forward.
“She’s definitely not free and goes on a journey of really figuring out, really trying to break free.”
Everyone Keeps Underestimating Joy
Joy may lack control over what’s going on around her, but Ayorinde doesn’t see her as powerless. In fact, the people around Joy might find out the hard way by overlooking her.
“Joy is also very underestimated. I think she’s incredibly underestimated, and I think that’s what gives her an advantage amongst all of these very powerful, very ambitious, opportunistic people.”
The loudest person in the room isn’t always the most dangerous. That assumption gives Joy room to surprise people and Ayorinde’s performance also helps sell that tension. Joy doesn’t need to announce every thought or broadcast every decision. There’s always a sense that something is moving beneath the surface. The question isn’t whether she recognizes the walls around her. The question is what she will do once she decides those walls need to come down.
Prepare to Yell at the Screen
Even though Fightland explores boxing from a British lens, expect to see an underworld that may feel unfamiliar to fans of 50 Cent shows, and Ayorinde believes its conflicts will travel well. The locations and details may change, but ambition, control, family, and betrayal speak a universal language. No subtitles needed for dysfunction. Ayorinde is especially excited to see how viewers respond to the characters and their increasingly difficult choices.
“I’m excited to see all the discourse, all of the people yelling at the screen, people going off on my character or Duke or Kingsley.”
Joy will almost certainly give audiences plenty to discuss.
