John Shearer: American Moments Documentary Set for World Premiere

A significant new documentary, John Shearer: American Moments, is set to make its world premiere in a unique setting. The film, which chronicles the life and work of the groundbreaking photographer, will be presented by newportFILM in partnership with the Newport Jazz Festival and the Newport Restoration Foundation. The event is scheduled for Thursday, July 30, at Rough Point, the historic Newport estate once owned by Doris Duke.

Directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker James Spione, the documentary explores the career of John Shearer, a pioneering Black photographer whose lens captured some of the most pivotal events of the 20th century. Working as a staff photographer for Look and Life magazines, Shearer documented major historical milestones, including the funerals of President John F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Attica uprising, and the career of Muhammad Ali. His work remains a vital record of the social and political unrest that defined the 1960s and 1970s.

The premiere event offers more than just a screening. It will be curated by Nate Smith, the Artistic Director of the Newport Jazz Festival, and will feature a live musical performance by the Alison Shearer Quartet. Led by saxophonist Alison Shearer, who is the daughter of the film’s subject, the quartet will provide a musical backdrop that complements the evening’s focus on cultural history and artistic legacy.

A Legacy Captured on Film

The decision to premiere this film in Newport highlights the intersection of historical preservation and contemporary storytelling. John Shearer was known for his ability to capture history from the inside, bringing a sense of urgency and empathy to his photography that resonated with audiences across the country. By bringing his story to the screen, Spione aims to ensure that Shearer’s contributions to American photojournalism continue to be recognized for their lasting cultural importance.

Musical Accompaniment

The inclusion of the Alison Shearer Quartet adds a personal and artistic dimension to the premiere. Alison Shearer has established herself as a prominent voice in the modern jazz scene, having performed internationally and collaborated with a wide array of artists, including Kurt Elling and Billy Porter. Her debut record, View From Above, received critical acclaim, including a top-ten album designation from NPR Music in 2022. Her participation in the event bridges the gap between her father’s visual legacy and her own evolving musical career.

This event serves as a reminder of the power of documentary filmmaking to preserve the stories of those who documented history itself. By pairing the film with a live performance, the organizers are creating an immersive experience that honors both the visual and auditory arts.
