This new take on the found-footage classic is being produced by James Wan through his Atomic Monster banner, alongside Jason Blum for Blumhouse. The project is currently being directed by Dylan Clark, who is also handling the screenplay rewrite. While plot details remain under wraps, the production has secured involvement from the original 1999 film’s creative team, including filmmakers Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick, and Gregg Hale, as well as original stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, who serve as executive producers.

A New Chapter for the Horror Franchise

The decision to revisit the property comes after the massive cultural impact of the original 1999 release. That film, which followed students documenting local folklore in Maryland, became a commercial phenomenon by grossing nearly $248 million worldwide on a budget of less than $1 million. By bringing in both the original cast and modern horror heavyweights like Wan and Blum, the studio is clearly looking to recapture the tension and mystery that defined the original experience.

The September 2027 release window places the film in a competitive month for genre fans, as it is currently slated to debut alongside other high-profile projects. As the production moves forward, fans of the The Blair Witch Project will be watching closely to see how this reboot modernizes the found-footage format for a new generation of theatergoers.
