Hulu Gives Ryan Coogler the Green Light for a Thrilling X Files Reboot

Hulu announced today that it will produce a pilot for a fresh take on the classic series. The streaming service gave the go‑ahead after reviewing a script by award‑winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler. This move signals Hulu’s commitment to bold, genre‑bending storytelling.

Coogler will write and direct the pilot, marking his first foray into television. He said he wants the story to feel truly frightening and to honor the mystery that made the original series a cultural touchstone. By leading the project, Coogler aims to blend his cinematic style with the investigative tone of the X Files.

Casting and Creative Team

Jennifer Yale, known for her work on “The Copenhagen Test,” joins the effort as showrunner. Yale will guide daily production and shape the series’ direction. Danielle Deadwyler, praised for her roles in “Till” and “The Woman in the Yard,” is the only confirmed cast member so far. She will portray one of two very different FBI agents who form an unexpected bond while working in a long‑inactive unit that studied unexplained phenomena.

Coogler, Yale, producer Sev Ohanian, Zinzi Coogler, and original creator Chris Carter will all serve as producers. Their combined experience promises a fresh perspective while staying true to the spirit of the original show.

What Fans Can Expect

The new series will explore the unknown with a modern lens. It will feature two agents who investigate strange cases that the FBI once set aside. Their partnership will drive the narrative, offering both tension and camaraderie. Coogler hinted that the tone will be “really scary,” aiming to deliver chills for both longtime fans and new viewers.

Earlier this year, Coogler discussed the project on a podcast and mentioned a conversation with original star Gillian Anderson. He expressed respect for the legacy and a desire to expand the mythos.

By ordering the pilot, Hulu joins a growing list of platforms investing in high‑profile reboots. The decision also reflects the streaming service’s strategy to attract audiences who crave suspenseful, sci‑fi drama.

Stay tuned for casting updates and a possible series pickup. If Hulu moves forward, the pilot could debut as early as next year, bringing a new chapter to the beloved franchise.
