Welcome to Derry

Welcome to Derry Promises a Darker, Deeper IT Universe & More

Before there was Pennywise hiding in the storm drain, there was Derry — a town cursed long before the Losers Club ever fought back. HBO’s Welcome to Derry takes viewers back to where the nightmare began. Showrunners Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane shared with The Movie Blog how they expanded the chilling world of IT into something darker, more emotional, and even more human.

Building the Origins of Fear

“IT is one of the most perfect novels ever written,” said Fuchs. “Andy and Barbara Muschietti set a really high bar with their films, so we wanted to do something that honors their vision but also digs deeper into the heart of Derry itself.”

The series draws inspiration from Mike Hanlon’s haunting interludes in King’s book, which chronicle the mysterious tragedies that have long plagued the town. “We wanted to explore those moments that suggest Derry’s curse runs deeper than anyone ever realized,” Kane explained. “Our goal was to make the town itself a living, breathing character.”

Unearthing the IT Mythology

Welcome to Derry

Fans have always wondered what drives IT, and Welcome to Derry promises new answers. “You’ll learn more about why IT chooses Derry, what fuels its hunger, and how it manipulates people through fear,” teased Fuchs. “There are exciting connections to other parts of Stephen King’s universe that fans will notice right away.”

But the showrunners made sure not to lose focus on the human side of the story. “It’s not just monsters and mythology,” Kane said. “The story works because it is about real people and the emotional horror they face. The supernatural stuff only hits hard if you care about the characters first.”

A Pennywise You’ve Never Seen Before

While Bill Skarsgård’s return as Pennywise remains one of the show’s biggest draws, the creative team approached him from a new angle. “You will see a version of Pennywise that will surprise people,” Fuchs promised. “He is terrifying, but there is also something deeply tragic about him.”

Kane added that fans should prepare themselves for pure horror. “By the end of the season, things get intense. You have never seen Pennywise this dark before. Horror fans are going to eat it up.”

Expanding Stephen King’s Legacy

Beyond the scares, Welcome to Derry gives new life to the corners of King’s world that have only been hinted at. “We wanted to bring the Black Spot and the Bradley Gang to the screen,” Kane revealed. “These are parts of King’s history of Derry that deserved to be told.”

The show also touches on the town’s deeper themes of denial, power, and prejudice, exploring how those forces feed the darkness beneath the surface. “That is the horror of Derry,” said Fuchs. “It is not just a monster. It is what happens when people ignore the evil right in front of them.”

Looking Toward the Future

When asked about future stories in the IT universe, Fuchs smiled. “We would love to keep exploring this world if the fans want it. Derry is full of secrets, and we have only begun to scratch the surface.”

With its mix of terror, mystery, and heart, Welcome to Derry feels poised to become HBO’s next major event series. For longtime Stephen King fans, it promises answers to questions they have wondered about for decades. For newcomers, it is a haunting invitation to step inside one of fiction’s most cursed towns.
