What Makes Live Casino Scenes So Popular in Movies?

Ever since the fledgling years of the film industry, there has been a close relationship between movies and casinos. Over the course of history, adult moviegoers have enjoyed many best-selling releases attached to the theme, while many others haven’t quite captured the public’s imagination.

It seems certain that casinos will be used to a significant extent moving forward. Gaming halls will provide backdrops to essential scenes, while some, or even the entire plot will revolve around casino play.

It’s a historic theme and one that will be used in the future, but what makes casino scenes so popular for the movie industry?

Relatable Gaming

One factor in the screenwriter’s favour is the fact that gaming is so relatable. Many viewers will have played at a live casino online or even travelled to a bricks and mortar establishment to take on the slots, roulette and card games.

Those who have never staked real money in a casino setting can also be familiar with the movie’s plot. Card games are a popular recreational hobby, and many will have played blackjack, poker or baccarat for fun. There may not be any money at stake, but those games remain competitive, and recreational players can still identify with the theme of casinos in the movie industry.

This ability to relate to casino play helps viewers to understand the plot and to see why winning or losing can have an effect on the direction of the movie.

Action-Boosting Drama

Casino games can also build and provide great drama. Roulette and blackjack offer good cases, but the best example here is poker. From the very first round of dealing, through to the reveal of the final card, there is tension all the way.

While everyday players will compete for smaller funds, there is much more at stake on the big screen. Million of dollars may be on the table as the drama builds. Poker also offers ideal opportunities for intriguing subplots. Players in direct competition will judge each other’s body language and facial expressions to see if there are any giveaways. Of course, there is always the possibility that a player may be bluffing, and that’s another unique element that makes poker such a good film choice.

It’s no coincidence that poker is the most popular game for writers and producers to focus on. The mechanics of the game lead to natural drama and tension, and that’s a great blueprint to follow.

A smaller selection of casino-related movies may showcase other games. In his novels and early forays into the world of film. James Bond was more of a baccarat enthusiast. Roulette, blackjack and slot machines have also featured in a host of films. Poker may be king, but there are many alternatives for movie makers to consider.

Ideal Locations

Locations are essential to any film, and the use of casinos in movies gives the producers help with the perfect backdrop. While it may not be true in every case, casinos are often glamorous and opulent, and this provides ideal cover for the plot.

Each movie is different, and they show the wide potential of casinos in films. Those with little interest in the genre may feel that the scope is relatively narrow, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Using a casino as part, or all of the plot, opens up infinite possibilities for writers and producers.

Despite casinos and gaming providing a well-used theme over the years, screenwriters and directors manage to produce new and innovative storylines centred around the casino. There’s no danger of the theme becoming stale, and that’s largely due to the factors we’ve mentioned above.

Relatable gameplay, drama at the tables, and some of the most spectacular locations around the world mean that casinos and the movie industry will maintain their special relationship for many years to come.
