Why you should care about the cast of the Suicide Squad

???????????????????????????????

Announcing the cast of the Suicide Squad film shook the internet earlier this week with a plethora of unexpected names being announced in the lineup in the ensemble film. In one move DC has, (arguably), trumped every bit of casting every by Marvel and their films and has assembled what might be the best cast in a comic book movie ever. Probably the most surprising casting announcement of all was that of Will Smith taking on the role of Deadshot for DC. Will Smith has had an interest in expanding the types of roles that he accepts for a while but with nothing developing from those rumors for years most people figured that it wouldn’t happen. Deadshot is the equivalent of an Expendable with Hawkeye level accuracy in aim making him one of the most sought out assassins in DC’s stable of villains. Ladies and Gentleman,
Will Smith has crossed the rubicon . His character can’t possibly be the central focus in an ensemble film and instead he’ll be more of an anchor point like Halle Berry in the X-men films. With Will’s wife is committing crimes in Gotham and now he’s taking on the role of Deadshot. I love these guys.

86th Annual Academy Awards - Press RoomAnother shocking announcement from the casting is the return of the Joker character in film. With Christopher Nolan abandoning the character after the untimely passing of actor Heath Ledger fans wondered how long it would take before WB was set to return the clown prince to the silver screen. Jared Leto is an excellent choice for the role and one that will keep fans happy in absence of Ledger and I can’t wait to see the latest incarnation of the Joker. Will it be similar to Heath Ledger’d glasgow’d menace or will we see something a bit more traditional? I’m hoping the people behind the latest films continue to pay close attention to the comic books and take notice of what the Joker has been up to lately. Any one of his newest incarnations would be an absolute hoot.

Tom Hardy returning to the DC universe already? He’s taking on Rick Flagg whom I have no exposure to so I’m going to reserve judgment on the character but instead appreciate the added layer of talent layered on this film. My Guess is that he’s the “Agent Coulson” of the group and will be more of a strategical leader.

the-wolf-of-wall-street-margot-robbie-hot-scene-pictures-5Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn? Yes please. Harley Quinn has rocked the small screen for well over a decade and seeing the character make the transition to the big screen is really exciting. Margot has some huge shoes to fill especially when portraying the love interest of Jared Leto’s Joker but I got a good feeling from Robbie when she acted alongside DiCaprio in the Wolf of Wall Street and something tells me that within the beautiful actress there’s actually a little ‘crazy’ just dying to be exposed.

JACK REACHERJai Courtney as Boomerang? An Australian to play an Australian character? I’m shocked that a casting choice that makes this much sense is actually happening. I can’t wait to see this character if only to further anticipation of seeing him take on his arch nemesis The Flash. Jai Courtney hasn’t had a chance to really impress most folks but this might be the most natural casting for the actor in ages since Russell Crowe is already locked in as Superman’s dad “Jor-El”. Cara Delevinge as Enchantress? This is the one I’m most unsure about. I have no experience with the actress or the character so im not going to set any expectations here and instead hope for the best.

David Ayer just rocked it with Fury so seeing this film as his next project is incredibly exciting. Let’s all pray and hope that WB was able to lock in some secure and BINDING contracts for all those involved so we don’t have a repeat of the last time I got excited about a director/actor casting in a comic film. Heck, im still scarred by that one and am more than apprehensive to post about these castings. Let’s see where things go from here but on paper this looks like it should even trump Fox’s All-Star X-Men cast and raise the bar for casting for everyone across the board while lowering concern for practically everyone who breathes air who wrote DC off in recent months.

  1. I always find it interesting when they use the same actors for characters from the same universe. First it was Chris Evans as the Torch in Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer back in ’07, followed by Captain America in ’11. Now it’s Tom Hardy with Bane and Rick Flagg. Don’t get me wrong, I adore both actors and think they’re amazing for both of their roles. I just can’t help but find it interesting how despite the large number of aspiring (and capable) actors in Hollywood, star power is so important that production companies would rather reuse actors that have already appeared in a similar franchise rather than take the risk with a lesser known actor.

    1. Your also forgetting Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern/Deadpool even though one’s DC and the other Marvel but I hear you on that one. The one casting that I’m certainly against is Channing Tatum as Gambit. Even though everyone hates X-Men Origins Wolverine, I thought Taylor Kitsch did a good job with the character. I mean their letting Ryan Reynolds Reprise his role as Deadpool in the upcoming movie. Why not let Taylor Kitsch have a chance? But since Tatum is the bigger name, I suppose that’s why they chose him over Kitsch.

      1. I also think Kitsch did a decent job as Gambit and it’s a shame the role was given to Tatum despite Kitsch’s clear rise in popularity. Tatum might be ok in the role but I hate seeing someone like Kitsch lose out on the opportunity due to the poor quality of the film rather than his performance. Heck, they’re keeping Ryan Reynolds so why not?

  2. I am really looking forward to seeing what DC will do with their shared universe to counter everything Marvel is planning. At this point DC is behind, but I can see that they are going all out with their casting. I have always been more of a Marvel fan over DC, especially because of their movies, but if the future DC films can replicate how well done the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy, was I can’t see how these films can falter. With so many superhero films scheduled for the next 6 years, I cannot wait to see the direction they are heading!
