David Slade directing Ed Brubaker’s “Coward”

It seems that there’s a new movie based on a comic book everyday lately and one of the most recently announced adaptations will be coming from Ed Brudabaker who’s been primarily associated with the Captain America line of comics lately.

…Coward, which Variety says will be adapted for film with David Slade directing, creator Ed Brubaker writing, and Jamie Patricof of Hunting Lane Films producing. The comic is an arc in Brubaker‘s Criminal series, which is comprised of several, stand-alone volumes that all exist in the same world…..
…Coward follows “Leo, a master heist planner who lives in a world of hustlers, crooked cops, pickpockets and lowlifes.” Brubaker considers it to be “a lot of different crime stories wrapped in one,” with a heist being the main focus…

The premise sounds really interesting, but I’m a little apprehensive with David Slade in the drivers seat. He just hasn’t given me the impression that this may be his forte, but I hope to be proven wrong. Brubaker has made a name for himself by writing Captain America but I’m not at all familiar with this comic property. The premise sounds interesting but I can’t get a clear distinction as to whether I should expect something similar to Sin City or the Italian Job. I’m looking for more details and will be sure to report back to you guys with my findings.

Neither. It is totally grounded in the real world and there’s nothing cheeky about it. The tone and mood is similar to Carlito’s Way.
