Voltron Assembling?

Another 80s icon toy is heading to the big screen (anyone surprised?)…

Vulture is reporting:

Vulture hears that a bidding war has broken out to finance a Transformers-size blockbuster retelling of the legend of the iconic robotic lions and their human pilots; Ryan Kavanaugh’s deep-pocketed Relativity Media is one of the very interested parties trying to sell itself to World Events Productions, the St. Louis–based company behind the original show.

…now World Events has both a Voltron TV series and a feature film in the works: Voltron Force will air on the Viacom-owned Nicktoons channel this May.

This show just wasn’t huge in my local area when I grew up. They were neat toys, but it wasn’t something that we all played with or watched. I do remember this was a mosh up of two Japanese shows, and the rights have been tangled up because of that for years. It was the original “Power Rangers” type reedit kids show, removing the Japanese and piecing things together to make more America stories. BUT, going to comic book and sci-fi and movie conventions, I do know there’s suddenly a lot of nostalgia about it, and so I bet this will generate a great deal of buzz.

  1. Voltron was an awesome cartoon series. I like both the Lions and Vehicles, but wasn’t there a third Voltron? Something like 3 dinosaur robots that would join together?

  2. I grew up in the 80’s, and Voltron was HUGE for me (along with Transformers, GI Joe and He-Man). So this is exciting news to see they are finally coming out with a Voltron movie.
