Superman Casting Rumours Out of Left Field

Looks like the lack of information outside of “No Zod” for Snyder’s Superman reboot has started the rumour wheels a turning, and with the suggested names all up for the part of the Last Son of Kyrpton, that wheel had a blowout and spun right off its axel into oncoming traffic resulting in a 17 car pileup claiming the lives of many, including a puppy.

First up is Joe Manganiello rumoured to be in the running. The True Blood/One Tree Hill heartthrob has stated on his twitter “Just to be clear… as of today, I am not “negotiating” to play Superman …but keep your fingers crossed and thanks for the wishful thinking!” So he isn’t on an official list.

Then the ever reliable tabloid rag The Examiner suggested John Cena or Dwayne Johnson.

The latest Hollywood rumblings report that WWE superstar (and upcoming actor) John Cena may be in the running to play Clark Kent, the mild-mannered reporter who takes on the life of a super hero by night.

This latest rumor is the second to include the name of a professional wrestling legend.

Prior to Cena’s name getting tossed into the mix, there was talk of Dwayne Johnson playing the role of Superman in the next yet-to-be-named sequel.

Couple things to point out in this rediculous fabrication of a rumour. Superman is not a “by night” superhero. He is very much a day player. Anyone who knows anything about Supes knows that the night is not a required tool for his charms. Secondly, this is not a SEQUEL. This will not be based on any established plot that has come before. It is a new franchise.

If there was any credibility to these outrageous headline hunters claims, they might have followed up on some of the other more basic details about the franchise and its lead character.

Personally I would love to see Johnson as Black Adam, and Cena might have meat, but he lacks the chops to carry a film like this. I am dismissing these two names as just pure fabrication. No way is this ever going to happen for either of them.

The last name to come up actually made me curious. Patrick Wilson.

Wilson is a big Snyder fan and has worked with him before, and he is throwing his name in the hat to play.. well anyone. Movieweb talked to Wilson, about it, and you know what… I could see it. Wilson is just more fanboying it and says “When I heard he signed on I called one of my agents and said that I hadn’t talked to Zack or anything but that I just wanted to read it. I don’t even care if I’m right for anything, I just want to know what he’s doing.”

So I dont see Manganiello, Cena and Johnson are just fabrications, but Patrick Wilson I could see as a real contender.

My only issue is the age they are aiming for. The story suggests it will involve Kent travelling the world and struggling on whether he is going to become Superman or not. I don’t know that he will be doing this in his 30s after living with his powers for so long.

  1. 420BAND….no offense…but I cannot stand when people criticize smallville or any show for that matter with “I can’t stand smallville {or insert show name her}….never got past a few episodes”….What do you really have to go on? I admitt after the first few seasons the show wasn’t the best…but the last 2-3 seasons….this one especially…has been great. Tom Welling has really grown into the character and physically he has also grown to look the part. I am alittle biased because I am a fan of smallville…but I think the reboot could work with him….just my opinion. But I cannot see John Cena or the Rock….they would look like King pin when they put on a suit. Welling looks the part and this season we saw him in the future as Clark Kent and he looked great. I’d like to give him a shot….I don’t think they will but you never know. I also don’t think there would be an issue with people separating the reboot from the smallville series…..like someone else said….”we are more intelligent than we are giving credit to ourselves”…we could separate the two.

    1. I totally agree. Tom welling will be good for this. He’s the right age and the right built. Maybe its the just me, but I think hes the best looking of all the names put forth. I risk upsetting fellow fans of supes here, but I’m sometimes reminded of Christopher reeves in Tom. If anybody else does then he’s gotta be a clear cut fav.

Anyways, having said all that I dont he’s even been considered by Snyder n gang. A shame really

      1. Tom Welling does deserve a chance at the movie part. He has been building into the character for 10 years (probably a record for audtions:)). His character on Smallville and his skills as an actor have grown in the last couple of years.

From a business standpoint he already has a strong following and relation with both the studio and DC comics. Additionally, Smallville’s last season would make a perfect advertising luanch point for the next round of superman movies.

I for one hope he gets a shot.

      2. Welling spent 10 years growing into “The Blur” not Superman.

Smallville is NOT Superman, but a fun look at “what if” in a completely different world filled with familiar characters.

I wouldn’t be against a Smallville movie a couple years after Smallville has its last season, but honestly I don’t want to see Welling pretend to be Superman after 10 seasons of seeing him play a very different Superman.

  2. They better not use ANYONE that’s ever come close to the set of smallville. That show is borderline insulting to me sometimes. If that guys used as Kent in the movie they may take that show seriously, or think its related to the movie. That show is the most unlegit thing ever.

I’m hoping that the 3 new marvel shows aren’t as far away from their source material as smallville is. I’m just praying

  3. Truthfully, I would really like to see Brandon Routh get another shot. I think he got a raw deal with “Superman Returns”, which was no where near as bad as some people make it out to be. Routh gave a good performance despite the mediocre material he was provided. He looked good as both Superman and Clark Kent. Snyder should give him serious consideration.

  4. Is Cavill the guy who is really short? Not sure, but if so Supes needs to be at least of average height…What about a guy like Josh Brolin if they are indeed casting a 35-40 year old Superman?

    1. I honestly don’t see them casting a 40 year old who is wondering if he should do anything with these powers.

He would have been living all that time never once considering if his powers mean he should do something with them?

I would be surprised if they go over 30 for this character. Mid 20s at most.

This is supposed to be the man who WILL be Superman.

      1. Agreed. I was going on Armie Hammer’s quote that they may be casting “older” not sure if thats the case…if they do, I dont expect the storyline to be the same. If it is indeed confirmed that this will chronicle the “post smallville, pre-Superman” era, they should definitely go younger. I havent heard Snyder confirm much except that this Superman will be different but not really…

  5. Henry Cavill for Superman…. this guy was nearly the Man of Steel but lost out to Brandon Routh in the casting process.. and Cavill was one of the contenders for Batman Begins (others being Jake Gyllenhaal and Christian Bale). So Chris Nolan knows him perhaps.

  6. I’ve been saying Joe Manganiello for a long while now and I totally expect he’ll get the part. I could be wrong but I have a feeling…

Also, Patrick Wilson in some makeup and effects would make a terrific Braniac. Just saying…

  7. I think Zachary Levi from the hit TV show “Chuck” should play Superman. You have to remember that anybody playing superman also has to be able to pull off the human side of him (Clark Kent).

Zachary has that unique combination which I think makes him an ideal candidate.

  8. Yeah the Rock would make a good Black Adam, but there trying to go for a new franchise/image so the lovely reboot word I think they will pick someone totaly new for a new fresh start really so no Welling or Rooth !

Will be quite interesting too see who is picked and how the storyline plays out, DC are not interested in no cross overs or mention of others or Justice League, if anything it will be simply teased of any relation or existance.

Lets hope they get it done right from the start, heck go back to Krypton for a good 10 minutes and do it from the beginning make Brainiac fly off, add some real Core elements from the Superman world….

Superman may never be a Dark Knight but it has to be what it is imo

  9. Not sure about this Supes film at all, add to this the Spidey re-boot so close together it just doesn’t make sense to me. How many different versions of the same thing do we need?

Cena and the Rock……..good god please don’t.

Why not go completley mental and cast Mickey Rourke as Lex and have him set Bizarro on an aging Supes played by George Clooney…..

  10. You know, I can see Patrick Wilson playing the Man Of Steel himself. He’s around the right age they’re looking for (30-40’s; at least I think also 40’s), the right build (Superman wasn’t built like a tank in the films), he has played a conflicted hero before under Synder’s direction (Nite Owl II in Watchmen), and most importantly, he’s a good actor.

If he doesn’t get the role, I can see him at least being a strong contender for it.

  11. I wouldnt be opposed to Cena playing a villain, but Superman? I dont see the duality needed, the Superman character is simple but complex.

Cena wouldnt be able to handle the Clark Kent persona required, which would be key to the Superman character unless Supes is gonna be in Kryptonian Spandex the entire movie.

  12. Why not cast Tom Welling to play the part? He is the perfect age/looks and body. Plus he knows the background already from Smallville. He will have the time also as this is Smallville’s last season. Plus he deserves to actually fly since his character hasn’t really flown yet after 10 years lol

    1. If they use Welling it will be a Smallville movie. The character is already recognized playing the same role for so long that people won’t be able to see him as “not that Clark Kent – this one”

      1. You raise a good point, but I still say Tom Welling would be exceptional. All the “Smallville” trappings could be dropped (most people who would go see a Superman feature film are not immersed in “Smallville” mythology). The “Smallville” Clark is still finding his identity and has not perfected the whole mild mannered reporter thing. Also, I think that maybe Supes fans (like me) are too slavish to the Donner era films. Does he have to be a bumbling idiot? A more contemporary Clark worked for “Lois & Clark”. Just my two cents.

      2. you don’t give your intelligence enough credit… you and I will both be able to be able to see him as “not that Clark Kent – this one” if we try.

      3. Sparky… you think that Superman fans and Smallville fans are that far apart?

Aside from Returns, Smallville is the closest thing that any Superman fan has seen of the Big Blue Boyscout on the big or small screen.

The point is that why take that chance on an existing actor who once played the role in a separate franchise when there are literally thousands out there who could do it. Dozens that we have heard of before.
