Joss Whedon Speaks Out on Buffy Remake

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is getting a reboot and it will have nothing to do with the original series at all. It will also be a feature film.

Joss Whedon (and all his fans) have already spoken out against this plan but they are not in any position to do anything about it.

Still Whedon made this statement today and I just LOVE his sense of humour about it.

Live for Films quotes Whedon:

This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths—just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, “Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER.” Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, “I’ll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!” Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I’m making a Batman movie. Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon.

I love his delicate delivery that he cannot stop this from happening any more than online petions or fans crying on message boards.

But they are moving forward with it, and Joss will get his cut even thought he is not at all involved.

I would rather have seen them play out a next generation of Buffy that deals 10 years after the fallout of the series ending. They don’t have to drag out and carry on the series, but they could start new and respect the content already presented.

All we can hope for is that this remake offers something new and fresh. Who knows, maybe it will be good?

  1. Blah! Why must they take something that was ended in a decent place and screw it up by trying to reboot it. Leave well enough alone. Focus on a different “slayer” or a different part of the Whedon verse if you want. I mean come on.

  2. I thought all that Buffy stuff was lame.

Saw the movie, it came of as a girl version of Fright Night mixed with Heathers wit.

maybee I’m off but, never dug it. same with the T.V. series of course

  3. I am not Whedon’s biggest fans, but I do side with him here. The powers that be are simply cashing in on a brand. Now, if they really wanted to get my ticket, they’d write up a yarn where Sarah M Gellar Buffy enters an alternate dimension. and encounters the Kristy Swanson Buffy. The universe isn’t big enough for both, so they have to fight each other in the Ultimate Smackdown.

Second thought, I would not screw with that. Nobody else should.

I like Whedon’s Batman comment. If it doesn’t pan out, he can hope for Harry Potter and The Toronto Tyranny Before Hallows Two Comes Out.

  4. I enjoyed his humor about the whole thing, I was more a fan of the Angel series than the Buffy series though.

The Buffy movie was entertaining at least. I know it was taken out of his hands, but it could have ended up much worse than it did.

  5. Yes, there was a movie. It was written by Whedon, but then taken out of his hands, and rewritten into oblivion. So really, this is the second time that a Buffy feature film has thumbed its nose at him.

  6. I love this guy. He just GET’S IT in all sence of the word. He connects so well with his target audience because he is a part of it. I hate the fact that they are rebooting this without his involvement.

Keep out of the mud though Joss we Whedonites are awaiting your next big thing, AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!
