Stephen Sommers Confirmed As G.I. Joe 2 Director

2009’s G.I. Joe was directed by Stephen Sommers. It was basically disliked by critics overall, but it made about $300 million worldwide ($150 domestic). Money talks, so G.I. Joe 2 is going to happen. Apparently Sommers will be back helming the sequel.

CinemaBlend reports:

The Wrap is reporting that Sommers is confirmed as the director for the second film, which already has a script in from Zombieland guys Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The Wrap has learned that the studio likes the draft they’ve got, which could mean things will be going into production, with Sommers in charge, sooner than you were expecting.

I’ve been a G.I. Joe fan since I was a kid. So I was pretty excited for 2009’s movie. Did I like it? Not that much. Did it make my eyes bleed because it was bad? Nope. Personally, it was just stupid, but fun at the same time. Just plain entertaining and ridiculous. Do I want a sequel? Yes, why not? I want to just go in and watch what Sommers and the team, do for the sequel. Hopefully, Sienna Miller is back. To me, she was by far, the best part of the film; hotness.

You guys want GI2? What story do you want Sommers to pursue on the sequel? What do you want to stay the same? What do you want changed?

  1. I enjoyed the movie, while they could have done a lot more with the story I feel that they were trying to build to something bigger and the bigger being the second movie, but they did pull in some heavy hitting stars. Like The Doctor – Christopher Eccleston and Marlon Wayans, Dennis Quaid and I wouldn’t mind Brendan Fraser and Dwayne Johnson actually having more of a part than just a brief cameo. With hitters like that and a solid story wow.

  2. i enjoyed the first one and i watched g.i. joe growing up and the spin to ripcord being black cause these are the times we are living in was genious and how they had to make the unrealisticness of the cartoon and made a story was genious to me they made it real life with a little make believe and that’s how u recreate a cartoon into a movie

  3. Count me IN, I enjoyed the first film, but will admit it wasn’t the greatest, it was mindless fun. I really like the action sequence in Paris and lot more..I’m sure Sommers would impress everyone with the sequel..

    1. I like the first movie! Like it was said “mindless fun” I just don’t want anymore Brendan Frazier. I mean I like dumb fun but let’s not get stupid. My son and I love gi Joe after watching cartoons I showed him

  4. I’m glad to see him back, I enjoyed the first one very much. This is G.I Joe were talking about, Were not expecting great acting, This is all about the crazy action scenes.

  5. What a trainwreck. The movie was horrible, and there was nothing redeeming about it to justify a sequel. In a perfect world, they’d take all the money they’re going to waste on this POS and put it towards making a GI Joe: Resolute weekly series.

    1. You are not the only one! I loved the movie! Made me feel like a kid again – and yes, the Snake Eyes vs. Storm Shadow element was great. Great fx too.

  6. I’m glad. To me Sommers has a style for summer movies. He may not be who people want for some films but I can say that about a lot of movies. Since I was introduced to him with The Mummy, his films since then, Mummy 2, Van Helsing, G I Joe, they’ve all been fun and just about what I expected.

For the sequel I want to say a bit of the same, and a bit of the new. Now that Cobra is introduced, they can go full on with the war between G.I.Joe and Cobra. One thing I definitely loved was the action. But the one thing they shouldn’t do is just up the ante for the sake of it. The story has to match that rise. So for me I’d like Bigger story, Bigger action.
