Riddler Listed As Batman 3 Villain?

Now that Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece, Inception, is out of the way, the rumor wheel has started to rotate once again regarding The Dark Knight future sequel. Today’s newest rumor gives us The Riddler as Batman 3’s main villain, and what actor might actually get to play him.

JoBlo reports:

FirstShowing.net has gotten word from a reliable inside source with access to a studio casting grid that The Riddler is in fact listed as a character in the impending comic book movie sequel.

“Even more interesting, the actor currently listed in the same grid to play the assumed villain is none other than Joseph Gordon-Levitt, whose status is just listed as ‘interested.'”

Rumors, rumors, rumors. Gotta love them. If this rumor/news turns out to be the real thing, I’ve got no problem at all with it. Christopher Nolan has always been a fan of puzzles, dreams and mind games. Inception is the latest example of that. It makes sense that Batman 3 would include one of the most iconic Batman villains, who in deed loves puzzles and mind games. Add to that, JGL possibly playing the role? Awesome. JGL is a great young actor, and I have no doubt he would give a great original performance. All we need now is for them to confirm something at least.

What do you guys think? Want this rumor to become true?

  1. There are so many possibilities here…
if this really is the last movie
than i hope nolan comes out with all guns loaded.
i wanna see riddler for sure.
    no catwoman or robin!!
also i think firefly would be an interesting villain..
i love mr freeze but that wont happen. =/
no clue where this is gonna go.
    but all i know is…
the third movie will be epic!

  2. Why do people think mr. JGL is a good actor? Name me one outstanding performance and list why it’s so good. I just saw inception and I can’t understand the hype surrounding himhim. He has like twelve lines which just reek of smug (i’m in a chris nolan movie) and the rest is CGI fight scenes. That’s not really a great acting performance.

Thomas Hardy on the other hand has proven his worth on oh so many occasions. Look up ‘Bronson’ and then look at star trek insurrection just to see how skinny he was before. I don’t have a particular villain in mind for Hardy (maybe croc but that sounds too weird for this franchise) but his range is much wider than mr levitt who to me just seems a little bit above keanau reeves.

  3. Riddler is perfect, but I always expected him to be older in Nolan’s universe, “middle-aged” as someone said. I would love to see someone work through riddles, and of course Batman needs to lie low–people believed that he killed those cops. I’m just curious where the story will lead…and is this for sure Nolan’s final episode?

    1. Yes, this is Nolan’s final episode. He confirmed that quite a while ago when he officially announced that he was back. He said that it was his final movie to end the story in a trilogy, and that the villain won’t be Mr. Freeze.

  4. No problem at all with JGL as the Riddler. He was probably the most badass character in Inception; cool as ice throughout. At this point Nolan can do no wrong so I’m down with whatever he decides.

  5. Levitt as the Riddler would be awesome casting. Wonder if Chris Nolan would add another villain like Black Mask or Deathstroke to team up with the Riddler for part 3. I’d like to see Deathstroke be part of this next sequel.

  6. Levitt is an very nice choice. The only thing that scares me a little in that news (not the casting choice) is that I think Riddler isn’t a strong enough villain, not an action one at least.
They will have to team him up with another one but then they might end up “wasting” one of the two like with Two Face in Dark Knight. That hcaracter deserved way more screen time.

I’d like to see a very sadistic Riddler. I think it would fit very well in Nolan’ universe. Black Mask would also be a very interesting choice I think.

  7. Under Nolan’s direction Levitt could be unstoppable I think he has the talent and could really shine. I just think Nolan has the unique skill of getting the best out of his actors. This isnt going to be the joke of Cobra Commander. Even after I left Inception i was praying to the film gods that Nolan would be looking to Levitt to be the riddler. I know it is only speculation at the moment but please oh please cast this guy. I think with Nolan’s skill and Levitts untapped talent there could possibly be another supporting actor oscar.

  8. Ever since Nolan started filming ‘Inception’, this Lovitt as Riddler yarn has been done to death. Besides, Lovitt would have to drop out of GI Joe 2 and maybe Frog King id this were so- as far as his involvement goes.

I would not mind The Riddler in the third Nolan film, but I would much rather see characters who are either untapped and/or a better interpetation than the Burton/Shumacher films…

  9. Joseph Gordon-Levitt has really come a long way since 3rd rock from the sun.

I wouldn’t mind the Riddler being the next villain. He an iconic villain and is well known. So he would have a wider appeal then say Bane or Black Mask.

As long as Nolan can makes him “darker” maybe a little more insane. He would be a perfect match for Batmans wit. Little less Batman and Robin Riddler and a little more Arkham Asylum Riddler.

  10. Interesting side note: Joseph Gordon-Levitt played alongside Heath Ledger in 10 Things I Hate About You – I really hope JGL gets cast if The Riddler is indeed a new villian for Batman 3

  11. Kind of hard to picture Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the riddler right now, but in Nolan’s hands, were this to be the eventual casting choice, the finish product would be just fine I’m sure.

But I’ve always envisionsed Nolan’s universe Riddler as being an older gentleman; middle-aged perhaps.
