Things have been quiet on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer remake front, and without much surprise. The die hard fans vehemently reject the idea of a remake which could bury a new film franchise entirely before it gets off the ground. But recently there was a rumour introduced that suggested that Vanessa Hudgens turned down a role in the Buffy remake on the basis that she didn’t think it would hold up against the Twilight buzz. There was even talk that Hudgen’s unspecified role that she declined wouldn’t be Buffy herself as the rumour stated that Sarah Michelle Gellar was also involved.
Well it turns out that as fast as that little rumour weed grew, it was also squashed. Hudgens didn’t decline the role, because she wasn’t even offered it. Nor has Sarah Michelle Gellar been approached at all.
But what about the teens today that have no connection to the original show, you ask them who Sarah Michelle Gellar is and they’d probably have no idea, she was our generations Buffy, why not let the next generation have there own. So what if there’s no Zander or Willow, like I said before new cast, new characters. It’s really not the end of the world if things get changed, look at Soaps, they change characters all the time but people still watch. If they pick the right actors, writers, directors, producers etc, then it might work out fine, maybe JOSS wouldn’t be involved, but look at what’s happened with every show he’s done since Buffy went off the air, they’ve all been cancelled, Dollhouse was awful, I’m not saying his writing is bad, but if it was really all that good he’d have better success keeping show’s on the air. Fan’s of the original Buffy like myself, ( I loved that show and have been watching my DVD’s a lot lately), need to move on already and let the past be the past, let’s see what somebody else can come up with, who know’s maybe the new version might surprise everyone, it might even be better.
What’s wrong with bringing the series back with new characters, the opening of Buffy clearly says “To each generation a slayer is born”, season 7 gave us a lot of new slayers, so why can’t they just use that as their starting point, with a new cast you get new demons. I always thought and still do to this day think they should have just built a new show around Faith, she’s a familiar character to fans of the show, Angel was a spin off of Buffy, why not a spin off for Faith. We’ve seen the return of show’s such as 90210 which is doing fairly well, their was Melrose Place, ok so that sucked, but now theirs Hawaii five O, and Nikita both show’s were very successful the first time around, if not a Faith spin off, bring the show back, and instead of calling it Buffy the vampire slayer, just call it Slayer, or The Slayer, or maybe even Vampire Slayer, what ever they wanna call it, it could have a new name and new characters, what’s wrong with that?
The problem is that the proposed show was not a continuation with some of the interesting things you suggested. None of them in fact.
They were saying they would reboot the series with a completely unrelated remake, with none of the canon of the series, none of the original actors, and nothing at all to do with it.
Worse, the man who created the series and provided much of the charm and writing would not even be involved. Joss Whedon doesn’t own this property though he did create it. He wasn’t even consulted.
The built in audience they would want to appeal to already hates the idea of it. If it was a spinoff of the original series no fan would have a problem with it.
But it doesn’t matter, because its not happening.
I agree with you completely, with so many new slayers activated after season seven I don’t see why they can’t give a new slayer a shot. Don’t get me wrong I love Buffy but how much more can she do, and if the cast won’t come back then the whole Buffy and scooby gang should be done. We have seen Buffy grow up fighting demons and vampires, cyborgs and gods. Buffy has died twice and been brought back, she’s killed vampires slept with vampires. Her story to me is pretty much been told, how about a new slayer for a new time. I mean is this about the “Slayer” in general or is it just all about Buffy? Twiilight would kill nothing cause thats more about a twisted teenaged love(obsession) with an immortal and that’s all. The Slayer is much more deeper then just some stupid girl playing mindgames with a were-wolf and vampire. The only show I would say needs the old cast to work would be Angel.
You are missing the point completely.
The proposed remake was not going to be a spinoff or continuation at all. They were disregarding EVERYTHING that the TV series and starting over.
All this fan speculation about what they could do next is irrelevant. They wanted to ignore all that, and the idea never flew. Its over.
Not happening with or without the original series.
I think that remake is not the right word to be used with a series as great as Buffy the Vampire Slayer however I think that there should be a Return of Buffy the Vampire Slayer to The world even if it is not with the original cast but most definately Joss Whedon should be involved!!! Also if someone such as Zac Efron or Vanessa Hudgens were to get Roles in a Return or Remake it would only be because they did the best at Auditions remember Everything is 50/50 in acting or in life.
I think its probably for the better that a remake is never done. Among the today’s teens Buffy would lose out to the Twilight buzz and frankly if a remake was done today with an all new cast chances are it would be filled with kids from High School Musical and Glee and the content would probably be totally different.
As much as I hate to say it I think us Buffyverse fans are better off with fond memories than an attempt at a revivial. Wow makes me feel old to realize that the tv will have premired 15 years ago next year.
Why do you assume it will be filled with cast from Highschool Musical and Glee? Has there been films overrun with these actors so far? Nope
Efron is by far the most successful, and he is doing so by his own merit, not teen fan popularity.
Anything can be remade given enough time since the original, and handled well enough for the fans. Buffy is just harder franchise than most to accomplish that.
I completely agree. Buffy is a show that we should remember and love. A remake would just mess everything up. Plus, it would be HORRIBLE if a remake was to be made, and Joss Whedon was excluded.
