Joe Johnston Talks Evans as Captain America

After the initial buzz of Chris Evans securing the role of Captain America, speculation arose as to how the pre-supersoldier serum Rogers would be portrayed.

As the story goes, Rogers begins as a scrawny weakling who is rejected from the army, but out of dire patriotism he volunteers for the SuperSoldier project which transforms him into the muscle bound and capable man we have all come to know as Captain America.

Would they get a different actor to play weakling Rogers and just have Evans emerge afterwards? Joe Johnston says it will be Evans from beginning to end.

ScreenRant quotes Joe Johnston:

“I can’t divulge how we’re going to do [the transformation], but the performance will be Chris Evans from beginning to end. An actor playing Captain America has to embody that backstory and let it inform his understanding of his new self. One of the interesting aspects of the character is the effect that kind of total transformation would have on his psyche.“

I figure this means they will CG Evans into a mocap suit and weakify his already bulging form into a scrawny Rodgers. This way the actor can play both sides of his physical self and properly convey the transformation trauma that Johnston speaks of.

And remember all that screen testing and drama around the casting announcement that was later than promised? Well apparently Evans didnt even have to audition or screen test. Johnston wanted him all along.

“Chris didn’t audition at all. I was already familiar with everything he’d done and was championing his cause, not that I had a fight from the Marvel team. They were fans of his as well. He came in to the art department to say hi, saw all the jaw-dropping art and designs on the wall and reacted the way I’d hoped he would. It was really his wonderful enthusiasm for everything he saw that cinched the deal…He will bring the perfect balance of dramatic performance and physicality to the role.”

    1. Its a waste of money to make a film they haven’t even made yet.

I would like to borrow that time machine that you have that let you see and properly judge this film before they even made it.

  1. I’m guessing that the plot line will run more along the lines of, “surfer type wimpy college kid needs money to pay his rent and signs up for research project” instead of the whole “patriotism” angle. I don’t know, I’m not convinced about Evans yet but I’m crossing my fingers.

  2. Cris will be just fine, How bout pulling a Bale and go machinest and lose weight?(NAH….TOO HARD)as referenced before, they did it just fine with the first spidey so it’s a non-issue for me.

I’m more worried about the director on this. they got chop happy with his last project and the final product suffered for it. I dont want that to happen here.

    So Hugo’s finally in?

  3. I think Hugo Weaving will turn in a tour-de-force performance as The Red Skull in this Captain America movie. I just dunno if Chris Evans can hold his own against Weaving. That remains to be seen.

  4. So worried about this especially since they admit that they wanted only him the whole time. Ugh until i see a trailer i am biting my nails on this and I have a long wait for a trailer.

  5. It would have been ridiculous if they got a different actor pre-serum. That would have ruined the continuity of the film. If you remember in the first Spider-Man they dealt with the same issue because Peter Parker was little wimp before the spider bit him. They can use mocap suit and that’ll be fine. Evans just has to bulk up more. Captain America is a big guy with a lot of muscle. Evans is cut but he needs to add more muscle weight.
