Weekend Boxoffice Report March 19th-21st

A blip on the map for Boxoffice this weekend as Alice in Wonderland continues its stranglehold on the number one spot amidst weak contenders to the throne. Not much competition was presented this week as a family film – Diary of a Wimpy Kid – squeaked out the top opening this week ahead of a romantic comedy. Frankly I was surprised it was that close of a race for the number two and three spots.

Opening Weekend March 19-21st

Alice in Wonderland $34,000,000 3 wks
Diary of a Wimpy Kid $21,800,000 Opening
The Bounty Hunter $21,000,000 Opening
Repo Men $6,151,000 Opening
She’s Out of My League $6,015,000 2wks

The Bounty Hunter was a fluff film full of predictable turns and a few smiles but no laughs, and the Repo Men had niche sci-fi written all over it, but still managed to rank higher than the second week running of She’s Out of My League.

Its just a dry time for big releases with the next “big” thing coming in 2 weeks with Clash of the Titans.

This coming weekend however we do have Hot Tub Time Machine and How to Train Your Dragon, which I am hearing nothing but good things about.

  1. I went to see The Runaways this weekend, which was really good. Dakota Fanning was exceptional and Kristen Stewart wasn’t her usual annoying self, perhaps there is hope yet! I wish it would have told more of the band as a whole instead of focusing mainly on Jett and Currie, but since they were the front women it’s understandable. The real bummer was at the end when they give you a written update on the futures of the women they only mention Currie and Jett and completely leave out Lita Ford. Sure, she isn’t nearly as popular as Jett, but it felt like a huge oversight. I could hear people in the audience saying, “What about Lita?”
Funny thing about the audience is it was comprised of a middle aged and older people, which my daughter commented on as we left. I believe she and I were the youngest people at the showing.
