Cameron Won’t Direct Spiderman 4 – Script thoughts

I can’t say as I blame him. Spiderman 4 is a train wreck. I just read what the story was supposed to be about (See below). Why would the guy who directed the 2 highest grossing movies of all time want to get involved in Spiderman 4? Why not just make him a late night host on NBC next?

MTV News has the interview:

“No, no,” Cameron told MTV News when asked if he’d been approached for the “Spider-Man” job. “It’s a little bit sloppy seconds, let’s face it.”

“I haven’t gotten a phone call,” said Cameron. “I don’t expect to — certainly [not] after this interview. But if you’re thinking about it, it’s sloppy seconds. I’m not interested.”

Then read what Spiderman 4 was SUPPOSED to be about and you actually get excited they killed it.

NY Mag gives us the story:

“Peter Parker gets over MJ, finds a new girl, falls in love. But: Peter also discovers her father is actually the Vulture, a naughty green guy with wings to be played by John Malkovich. Peter is torn between the love of his new lady and taking down the Vulture. Being a Spandex tight-ass, he decides to take down the Vulture, and kills him.

This patricide goes down poorly with Peter’s new fiancee, and she rejects him. Despondent, Peter decides to abandon his superpowers, and Movie No. 4 ends with Peter Parker throwing away his Spider-Man mask, and audiences wondering if they are watching Superman II.”

Doesn’t this sort of sound like the Sandman plot?

  1. i believe that sony pictures, cancelled spiderman 4 with raimi, because they want very very much james cameron, whatever he says about his future plans.and i think that they will press him very much.the “no” that jim told these days about directing spidy 4 don’t tell me anything.spiderman was always one of his top thoughts and dreams.i believe that we will see more the next months.

I WISH SO SO MUCH jim direct spidy 4!!!!

  2. how did it come to this i can’t fathom… ooh yeah spider-man 3… so we reboot, really? i mean really??

leave this franchise alone for awhile, and reboot it after like a decade or so. makes more sense really.

  3. This is just a rehash of plot points from other movies. Peter gives up his costume (Spider-man 2). Peter kills the father of someone close to him. (Harry and the Green Goblin). The only thing I do like is not having MJ as the love interest. I would have much rather seen the Lizard as the villain and Gwen Stacy as the love interest.

  4. Terrible plot. Maybe the script’s one of the reasons why Raimi and Maguire walked. Why can’t Marvel hire its fan-favorite writers to “advise” the screenplay perhaps?

  5. Beck — I’m sure Toby will get a pretty petty… as he should, if the studio signed on the dotted line. I’m not so sure he’ll get $50 million, though — there was probably a clause for some kind of a buy-out if the studios didn’t film both or either of them.

  6. I remember hearing that Toby Maguire had signed on for 50 million to do spider-mans 4 & 5. If they’re rebooting the franchise without him, does he still get the money he’s owed?

  7. If this was the actual plot, it’s no wonder Raimi had problems with it. Cameron is smart to stay away from this movie. With Marvel’s atrocious retcon and rebooting a billion dollar, 7 year old franchise, Spider-Man is tainted goods. It really is too bad that Sony won’t lose control of this, or else Marvel could reboot by way of the Avengers movie.

Oh well, Spider-Man was fun while it lasted.

  8. I’m glad Cameron doesn’t want to direct, because I would much rather see Battle Angel next. At this point I couldn’t give a shit about Spider-man, and have been antcipating Battle Angel for years.

    1. Thats the point. As Brock said above, that was the paraphrased nutshell of the Spidey4 script.

Cameron wouldn’t be doing that script anyways, but still gives us some hope as to why the whole thing was canned.

  9. Spiderman 2 is the only good Spiderman. This is the most overhyped, overated franchise. Who gives a fuck about this story. Let The Hughes Brothers do it. Im not kidding.

  10. Sounds EXACTLY like the plot with Harry and his father…just with a gal instead. And now Peter has moved on from worrying about MJ to worrying about someone else? If I wanted to see the same movie, I’d watch the first two…at least they’re good.

  11. Hard to say if that synopsis of the dead Spidey 4 was one draft or another. That latter half of it is what Spider-Man did in 2 for a short time. Getting engaged/wanting to be engaged echoes 3 as does leaving a foe for dead. What would cause Spidey to kill Vulture anyway?

It would actually make more sense to keep Felicia Hardy as the Black Cat.

Anyway Brock… you have it wrong.
Regardless of that story was Spidey 4 or not, it is neither here nor there in relation to James Cameron. The concept of Cameron coming to Spidey had zero to do with the problems with that possible Spidey 4 storyline

That had to do with the proposed reboot.

In any case, I’m actually very happy that Cameron shot them down even before the phone rings.
