Caine says No Depp in Next Batman

Remember when Michael Caine, clearly a Batman insider spilled about casting news for the as-yet-to-be-started third Batman film? Well that turned out to be blind speculation and completely unfounded.

Well Caine is spilling more news, now sharing the certainty of Johnny Depp’s lack of involvement. Or perhaps his lack of credibility regarding such things.

MTV Splash Page quotes Caine:

“There is nobody, there’s no script, there’s nothing,” Caine told MTV News of the status of the next “Batman” movie. “It can’t possibly be made before 2011 because ‘Inception’ is such a big picture.”

“[They] won’t tell me anything because I said this before,” laughed Caine of the no-tell policy surrounding him after last year’s Depp/Hoffman story. Nevertheless, Caine offered this bit of “news”—before admitting that it could be wrong, and he’d be in trouble all over again.

“Johnny Depp is great in anything, but there is no Johnny Depp in this Batman,” he smiled. “They tell me in no uncertain terms.”

So lets review. There is nobody, there’s no script, there’s nothing. There is also no Depp?

If there is nothing, how can there be no Depp. Who’s to say there WON’T be a Depp? With all the uncertainty and no direction taken as of yet, how can he know that?

Maybe that’s the point. Let’s stop listening to Michael Caine about Batman news.

  1. If they’re going for any kind of continuity between 2 and 3, then in MY opinion the Riddler is the next logical villain choice.

One of the Riddler’s biggest hang-ups is trying to figure out the true identity of Batman, and after the whole hullabaloo in Dark Knight of Batman revealing himself to the press/Joker lest people die, then that would no doubt peak a soon-to-be Riddler’s interest as to who batman really is…perfect lead in.

As for what exactly the story is, im sure it’ll be great as always, but I hope that IF they use the Riddler they focus more on his egotism and riddles, and not trying to make him like Frank Gorshin’s or Jim Carrey’s portrayal.

In my mind, a Chris Nolan Riddler would not be unlike John Doe from Se7en.

  2. I agree with Coatesey – Matt Damon could be awesome as The Riddler. He can play manic, crazy, out of control but has also proved in the Bourne films that he can handle the physical aspects of providing a worthy foe to the Dark Knight.

  3. One thing I liked about Ledgers Joker was that he could fight and didn’t just rely on henchmen so with that in mind rather than more obvious choices for the Riddelr like Depp (who would be amazing) or Crispin Glover (who would be terrible), how about Matt Damon? I know your initial reaction will probably be to laugh and that its a terrible call but the more I think about it the more I think it could be a cool idea!

    1. The Joker in The Dark Knight didn’t really know how to “fight”, and he DID rely heavily on his henchman. Most of the time he got the upper hand on Batman in combat through trickery.

  4. Come on, Rodney.

“If there is nothing, how can there be no Depp. Who’s to say there WON’T be a Depp? With all the uncertainty and no direction taken as of yet, how can he know that?”

    Really?
Who’s to say then there won’t be a Megan Fox as Catwoman, for that matter? Or Aaron Eckhart returns as Two-Face? I’m not saying Dent/Two-Face is alive nor am I suggesting Fox is in the running for Catwoman, nor Miley Cyrus as Batgirl etc. I want to be clear on that. But given the comment you made, that’s the measuring stick you put out.

It’s clear to me Caine means Depp isn’t in Batman 3 because there is no Batman 3 yet.

  5. I know it’s supposed to be a real movie, but i reckon ‘inception’ IS batman 3. The teaser is to throw people off ;)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt looks a bit like heath ledger don’t he…

  6. Well, this really just means that there’s nothing moving on Batman 3, thus, Depp (currently) can’t be in it.

Besides, he’s not going to be in the next Batman movie anyway. Nolan’s films have always cast lesser-known actors as villains.

      1. That’s true. But I don’t see why it would suddenly shift. Many of the actors have been cast contrary to their usual screen persona. If Johnny Depp WASN’T going to play a loopy character I’d be fine with it.

I’d prefer that lesser-known actors be cast anyway.

      2. Ok but by that logic there are probably 10 big actors out there. Those 10 actors can’t be in every movie. Maybe that’s the only reason they weren’t in the first 2.

      3. That the truth. None of the actors who portray villains in the recent Batman films are big names in the least to the general public. They’d never be able to sell a movie based on their name. Actors such as Depp can sell movies, it’s reality.

  7. No Depp please, dont get me wrong. Great actor and a respectable carrer. If they are planning on a Riddler for the next film. I would love and die to see Crispin Glover as the “Riddler” who agrees????

    1. No. No Crispin Glover. He is very over rated and all every geek was saying last film was Crispin Glover has to be the Joker. Johnny Depp is a MILLION times more capable of producing an original take on the character, just as Heath was a million times better at producing an original take on the joker. I know Glover is a strange guy who seems like a comic villian in real life, but if you actually stop and think about it, it’s not really the best fit. Would it do? of course. But why settle for something okay when you can get someone great?
