First Look at Eminem in Funny People

Eminem has a cameo appearance in Adam Sandler’s Funny People and we have our first look at his meeting with Sandler’s character.

Now this is the appropriate use of a non-actor in a film. I am not opposed to having these “non actors” be in movies, I just don’t think they should be burdened with carrying the whole film. Eminem’s role in 8 Mile being a small exception as he essentially was playing a role modeled after .. well Eminem. He just had to be himself and he did a great job at it.

I do like the revelation that Film School Rejects shares about Apatow on directing Eminem:

“I was scared to pitch jokes to him then I realized his songs are as nasty as anything that has ever been spoken. There is no way to offend him.”

After seeing his staged gag with Bruno, I would assume that Eminem has a great sense of humour and thick skin about these things. You would have to in a genre of music that revolves around boasting about what you have, and battling against people verbally telling them what they don’t have.

I can’t wait to see Eminem and Sandler play off each other.

  1. I’m not that excited about this cameo at all, doesn’t intrigue me. I used to be a fan of Eminem when his first albums came out but then his whole bit got old really fast. My friend let me borrow his new album and was completely turned off by it. He does have a good ability for rapping, but the content that he raps about just got old. And never really saw 8 Mile but I hardly doubt it would be difficult to play yourself in a movie so I can’t say that he is “great actor” either. But since this is a comedy I am sure that I will laugh either way.

  2. I disagree with downplaying Eminem’s role in 8 Mile by saying he was “just playing himself”. There is a big difference between your natural responses to real life events as they occur and then “acting” those same scenarios. Just because you may have lived through certain events doesn’t mean you can then reenact them perfectly and easily.

As for the character just being himself, that’s equally as silly to say. To begin with, I don’t think you know the man well enough to make that assessment, you’re just basing that off marketing which told you the character was just like Eminem. besides, just because a character has a similar personality and motivation as he may have had at one point in his life, this doesn’t automatically mean he can play the part despite having no acting ability. That whole argument that playing “yourself” is easy makes no sense.

It seems to me a quick way of shooting down his acting ability to fit in line with the theory rappers can never act. What about Eminem? “He doesn’t count, he was just playing himself”. What about Will Smith? “He doesn’t count…”. What about Ice Cube? “He doesn’t count…”.

Maybe the whole theory that rappers can’t act, just doesn’t have any credibility. Perhaps whether someone is a good actor or not has nothing to do with previous entertainment work.

I’m not a big rap fan either by the way.

  3. Rodney is this your only job?

i’m not being insulting or anything, i remember having some adds up on one of my sites to love film, and i got a tenner every time someone signed up for a free trial, do you use anything simular on here?

“When you walk through da door it was clear to ………………..” no i wont torture you

    1. In fact the more I think about it, the surer I am, the character of Wesley from “Wanted” is based on Eminem. I vaguely remember reading about it in Wizard magazine.

    2. Ya, I would go with Wanted as well. When I read that graphic novel several months ago I was dumbfounded at how much he looked like Eminem.

    3. All of you who said Wesley Gibson from the graphic nover “Wanted” are correct. Bake yourself a cookie and celebrate in your honor.

  5. RODNEY is rodney…sure we had are T4 differances but you and john still write your feelings and i still comeback and cant wait for my screen to load to see whats crackin out there…..happy birthday fucker….if i was gonna give u a present it would be a 10 speed and a redbull! go team go

    1. Proudly 37 tomorrow.

And as I had to remove all of the other comments from this “ASDF” (also using the screen name “EyeCatchingName”) because he wanted to sling insults and encourage people to visit our friend’s site at slashfilm.com, I can only assume he wanted to make an insult out of this question.

We agree that slashfilm is a good site and link to them sometimes. They have an awesome staff, and I would never discourage someone from visiting their site. I would however remind the International Friends that slinging insults and telling people to visit other sites because “this one sucks” is not tolerated.

  6. lol Rodney im flattered, you basically dedicated this post to me.:) But ya im not gonna hold it against you tht in the last post about The Game tht u were basically saying that Eminem wasnt a good actor then in this post you say he did great and that you cant wait to see him in this movie.

    1. They keep trying because they think their playground insults are going to upset me.

That’s what the delete button requires far less effort than his empty efforts.

The best part is that every time he clicks on another link and leaves another message it increases our traffic and ad revenue. So he can do it all day if he wants.

    2. “The best part is that every time he clicks on another link and leaves another message it increases our traffic and ad revenue. So he can do it all day if he wants.”

LOL….wait does it still do that even if you delete his comments?

      1. Yes. Traffic is based on page visits.

So while he thinks that he is upsetting me or somehow hurting me, all he is doing is ensuring this site remains profitable and that I still have a job. lol
