Darren Lynn Bousman’s “Mother’s Day” Gets Financing

In my opinion, Darren Lynn Bousman is a mediocre director at best. Saw 2, 3 and 4 were all just empty shadows of the original… each one getting progressively worse and worse, and Repo The Genetic Opera was a bit of a waste that got lots of early buzz while in production but then no one believed in it enough to get an actual release. I have no idea why his name is still bounced around as much as it does. But I digress.

Bousman has been working on a pet project for a while now… “Mother’s Day”, a remake of an old Troma horror flick. Looks like he just got the financing to make the movie and everything is a go. To folks over at We Are Movie Geeks give us this:

Twisted Pictures, the Genre Co. and Rat Entertainment have assigned themselves the task fo producing and distributing this film. The original ‘Mother’s Day’ revolved around three female campers who find themselves being terrorized, raped, and murdered by a couple of sadistic brothers. The brothers are trying to impress their insane mother for Mother’s Day. This remake will have the family returning to the house they once lived in to terrorize the new owners.

I’ve got to admit I’ve never seen the original, but damn this does sound like it could be a lot of fun. Brett Ratner is also attached to produce, which doesn’t really mean anything here nor there.

I just hope Bousman can deliver something better than his Saw installments. We’ll wait and see.

  1. i never will understand our fascination with these slasher films, especially the 80s genre gore flicks. i mean i like my horror other worldly, there are enough real psychos out there killing folk. i read the synopsis like..again, women being killed and raped by phycho killers and it sounds like fun. lol damn.

i know, i know. “lighten up” they will say. but can anybody tell me why these flicks are fun. slashers are in the same league as torture porn. at least to me.

rant over and yea this director is pretty mediocre, repo! as crappy as it was, it was very original. the set designs were great, and a lot of love and time went into it. just not the best execution.

  2. You should also note that Darren was one of the writers with Saw II and also directed an episode of Fear Itself. The thing you said about Repo! the Genetic Opera is a bit untrue, while it wasn’t a huge success it’s still being played at theatres today and it really does have a cult following. The movie made more money in the few theatres it was released in then the #1 movie of the week. While it was panned by the mainstream critics, people to the left really adored it. While it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, some left field people still hated it but they all were in agreement that it was something new and fresh. I’m assuming you haven’t even seen Repo! the Genetic Opera… You should. Even if you hate it, it is really great to watch. It could have used 30 extra minutes and another 5 million to its budget but they really did create something amazing. You also said no one believed in it, that isn’t entirely true. They basically had no idea how to promote it. Really, how do you promote a rock opera about organ repossession starring Paris Hilton and Sarah Brightman?! All the promotion was done by Darren himself and Terrance Zdunichand Darren Smith (the two creators of Repo!) and what they did is really quite remarkable.

Darren may not have proved himself yet as a great director but he really has a passion and he is devoted to his projects. He puts 150% in. Have a bit of faith; I think he is going to be one of the great horror directors of my generation.

  3. I grew up with older siblings 17 or older back in the 80s, so I saw a lot of these types of movies growing up. Mother’s Day, April Fools Day, Return to Horror High, etc…They’re all pretty bad honestly hahaha but for it’s worth, they are a lot of fun.

  4. You’re right, it does seem like a lot of fun but the fact that he is directing….IDK…saw 4 was pretty horrid. That storyline sounds great and could possibly be terrifying, but again…not much faith in him
