Frank Miller takes on Buck Rogers

Looks like Frank Miller will be drawing in on doing Buck Rogers.

ComingSoon says:

Odd Lot is in negotiations to option the rights to “Rogers” from Nu Image/Millennium, which obtained those rights this year from the Dille Trust. Millennium is expected to get a credit on the movie but won’t be involved in day-to-day production.

Miller will write and direct his own big-screen take on the comic serial; while the creator has only begun to sketch ideas, it’s expected to be a darker take, with many of Miller’s signature visual elements and themes, such as corruption and redemption.

I was never a big fan of Buck Rogers in my youth, but I am pretty certain it didnt revolve around themes of corruption and redemption. Buck was a man thrust through time and ended up helping a warring faction in their struggles. The story was always just pure adventure to me.

I don’t have anything against stories of corruption and redemption, but I get a little worried when I hear the themes are being applied to remakes of old serials that didn’t have those elements.

Also, I would hope that Frank Miller might do this without over stylizing it like his previous Sin City and 300 efforts.

  1. Somehow, I can’t see sci-fi nostalgia spelling out box office success unless they really bring something new to the table. Flash Gordon has a bigger fan-base, and even that movie might have to struggle.

  2. I can’t wait for a Frank Miller take on Buck Rogers. I happen to really dig what Frank does and don’t think there is any reason for people to bash him. If you aren’t into something don’t jump on every message board and bash it. Just don’t bother wasting your time with it. You only have one life to live. Why waste it on being “angry” about someone you don’t know over a movie that you aren’t being forced to see?

I’m not into Darren Aaronofsky… but I don’t go on every post about “The Wrester” and make bogus claims about his work do I? It’s a matter of personal taste. Unfortunately most people, even though they claim to respect that, fail to see the fact that they don’t.

  3. I was referring to the online community. There’s much negativity floating around concerning this movie. Based on that I’m worried. I don’t wanna spend my cash, which is in short supply, on a movie that will suck. I want to like the movie, but the trailers aren’t doing it for me. I’ll wait for some solid reviews to be posted before I make a determination.

  4. Or they scavenge looking for the one or two reviewers that the movie actually struck a chord with then throw those up on the commercials with splashes of “Brilliant!” – Boise Community Newsletter.

They might be the only ones, but there are newspapers everywhere with reviewers that just may genuinely like a film everyone else dislikes.

But sometimes one or two BAD reviews of a movie spoil it for everyone and the movie just might.. maybe.. be good.

  5. Yeah I mean remember when Gigili came out all the commercials came out saying it was good and it turned out to a giant crapfest… It seems many movies now a days are paid off to look good on tv hahahaha

  6. If you had seen the recent commercials with raving reviews of this movie splashed all over them it would appear at least someone liked it.

Or at least they want you to think so, and give it half a chance.

And Bobafett…. I loved MysteryMen, Shadow and Rocketeer.

  7. First of all Frank Miller did not DIRECT any of direct Robocop or 300. As a writer Frank is very very talented. As a director, not so much. Even Sin City was probably more Rodriguez and Tarantino.

However, I will also say that perhaps The Spirit was not the best project for him, and frankly for the movie going public. There are plenty of projects that even though they are well planned, and with talented casts, sometime they just can’t tap into what the public wants.

Some movies I can think that I’m reminded of when I think of this (in the same context), The Shadow, The Rocketteer, SkyCaptain and the World of Tomorrow, and Mystery Men. Most of these were unabshedly bad. Although my favorite of these is The Rocketeer, and I was sooo disappointed with Mystery Men. What a cast the latter had!

I’m willing to give Frank another chance. Although I’d rather him do something original.

  8. The wolf in the 300 graphic novel looked exactly the same. The whole movie was ripped right off the pages of 300.

Not over rated at all. They did a wonderful job with a literal translation.

But Spirit looks bad so now the lemmings have to call Miller a hack. They can’t help it.

  9. Yeah but looking at the preview it looks like Sin City with a guy wearing a mask… And honestly 300 was way over rated… For one if you are going to design a monster sized wolf in a movie it helps if the wolf looks like a giant wolf and not a retarded panther… I’ll watch The Spirit but I don’t think it will do justice to the graphic novel…

  10. Kristina… The Spirit hasn’t even come out yet. And really, one or two bad movies on his track record wouldn’t be a bad thing. He did Robocop, 300, and Sin City, but now one bad review and your are selling him up the river?

The guy goes from untouchable awesome to “movie killer” over a movie you haven’t even seen yet.
