Time Magazine Best Inventions 2008

Time Magazine has decided to compile the Best Inventions of 2008 a solid 2 months before 2008 ends! I guess if something really cool gets invented before Christmas they can just count it on next year’s list.

However on that list I found some interesting things:

The Direct-to-Web Supervillain Musical at #15
Doctor Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog marked history as the first online distributed web feature that was available for a short time and will shortly be out on DVD for purchase. Its initial run was so popular that it broke the internet. This model exposed Joss Whedon’s thumb in the eye of the Writer’s Strike as he created this during the pointless time off it created. I hope to see other film makers taking a stab at gaining popularity this way.

The Global Seed Vault at #6
Superman had the right idea. If you want to keep something sacred, do it in the artic circle. The Seed Vault is a safehouse to back up all the seeds of the world in the event of disasster so that no form of vegitation is wiped out by happenstance. Kal-El has some good ideas, its about time we start observing them. Like not kneeling to Zod. For serious.

Hulu.com at #4
Making YouTube look like a video arcade from the 80s, Hulu.com makes it capable for you to watch days old episodes of your favourite TV programs and slightly older movies without bending over and taking it from your local cable provider. Better yet it is free and legal! Provided you are a resident of the United States. Hulu.com doesn’t work in Canada and so here we have to continue to bend over like we do with phone plans for iPhones.

On a list that places two electric cars, worlds fastest computer, internet in space, bionic body parts and the Hadron Collider, I find it very interesting that entertainment advances are considered among the “best” inventions of the year. (Yeah, I know I made the Seed Vault a movie related thing – sue me)

  1. I’m from Asia so I guess that’s why I haven’t heard of Hulu

Anything with Neil Patrick Harris singing in a mad scientist coat is definitely worth being a 2008 highlight.
