Ridley Scott Set To Shoot The Forever War

Joe Haldeman 1974Commander Rider Scott looks like he will get a crack at adapting the book The Forever War after wanting to do so for 25 years. We get the following scoop from our friends at comingsoon:

“I first pursued ‘Forever War’ 25 years ago, and the book has only grown more timely and relevant since,” Scott told the trade. “It’s a science-fiction epic, a bit of ‘The Odyssey’ by way of ‘Blade Runner,’ built upon a brilliant, disorienting premise.”

The book revolves around a soldier who battles an enemy in deep space for only a few months, only to return home to a planet he doesn’t recognize some 20 years later, Scott said.

I saw Body Of Lies this weekend and was disappointed. Ridley Scott continues his hit or miss antics and I have no expectations when I see his films now. They’re a roll of the dirty dice, and you hope for something good; but aren’t surprised by shit.

Perhaps Ridley will ride proud again in his most fertile genre of Science Fiction. Finally getting the rights to a project he has wanted to do for 25 years may bring out the best in him. 25 years is a long time to mull over what you would do with a project, and in his minds eye perhaps Ridley has practiced this into perfection.

Have any of you read The Forever War? If so – what do you think of it, as a book, and possible adaptation.

  1. I like “blade runner” but it was a lot different form the book. Which is ok because I think it came out better then the book. This was a great book and I just hope that the changes that are made leave the core intact.

  2. I liked Matchstick Men, granted it was not what you would expect from Ridley Scott. I also liked Body of Lies, again, granted they could have done without the love interest, but the end would have need to be totally scrapped and redone had that not been part of the story. Needless to say, I will be looking forward to his next couple sci-fi projects.

  3. Ridley has his hits and misses and they seem to come in groups. For every great films like Gladiator, Hannibal, and Black Hawk Down we also get disappointing films like American Gangster, Body of Lies, and Matchstick Men. Hopefully we are ready to get 3 more great films from Ridley next.
