Will Smith Set To Play The Last Pharaoh

TaharqaWill Smith has scored perhaps his greatest role to date as Taharqa: Pharaoh Of Egypt! We get the following skinny from our friends at the movieweb:

Braveheart writer Randall Wallace is set to write The Last Pharaoh, with Will Smith in mind to play Taharqa in Columbia’s drama about the pharaoh who battled Assyrian invaders in ancient Egypt.

According to Variety, Smith has long wanted to play the pharaoh and brought Wallace the Taharqa story. The film will focus on his battles with Assyrian leader Esarhaddon starting in 677 B.C.

Ancient Egypt Vs. Assyria on the big screen sound good to me. It appears Smith had a hunger to play the Nubian Pharaoh, and it was kick-ass that Wallace was able to smith a script for Smith upon his request. With luck the excitement and vision of both men will translate into excellence.

If this has “Braveheart level” battle scenes, I will more than excited. Ancient Egypt is a fantastic place, and a perfect setting for an epic war film. It’ s a very alien culture that has its roots on earth, and I think that’s what gives it such an appeal. History is full of magnificent tales, and Its always a treat to see them adapted (well) to the screen.

We will be sure to keep you up to speed on the progress of this film, and I am already looking forward to the still photos.

  1. Will Smith in an Epic Drama sounds good but his target audience tends to be the young hip crowd. The days of the Epic dramas have kinda dwindled in relation to Action movies. I dont see this movie being popular with his target crowd, epic dramas in most part drag on and young crowds aren’t into that. But I can for the most part see this working if the script is right. I think Will takes a big leap of faith on this one, lets see if Will Smith has what it takes and make us believers. I would probably go see it at theater as long as trailers can make it seem interesting.

  2. I’m very much looking forward to this. I’d love to see Smith try his chops at an epic drama. It may convince the naysayers that he can act. Malfumax, I’m big fan of Smith but I know where you’re coming from. You can’t blame him or the studio from continuing to bank on what’s worked in the past. That’s Hollywood’s M.O.

This place and time has huge potential for a fascinating story. Ancient Egypt’s military strategies and weapons technologies can provide for some amazing material.

  3. Will Smith has become an incredible actor and always has been (I still say he needed an oscar nomination for I Am Legend and Pursuit of Happyness). I wanna see him in Seven Pounds which comes out in December

  4. I hate will smith
today’s movie is like will smith with pixar mix,

    don’t get me wrong
i love all of his movie includes Handcock, But I still find that, an amazing movie is always goes to Will Smith, which can be done by anyone…

It’s amazing that Will Smith always keep himself to the best studio and script and that’s what counts !

Although he targets kids audience which is always a win, win situation !
