Zak Penn Set To Spin Tale Of The Argonauts

ZakpennAloha International Friends! My vacation is over and I have brought news from the Isle Of Colchis! Zak Penn has proclaimed that he will craft a new take on the classic tale of the Argonauts. We get the following scoop from our friends at the Movieweb:

Zak Penn, the scribe who is best known for adapting such comicbook properties as The Incredible Hulk and X-Men for the bigscreen, has signed on to write and produce The Argonauts for 20th Century Fox.

According to Variety, Fox’s version of The Argonauts is based on Penn’s original take on the classic Greek tale. In Greek mythology, the Argonauts were a band of heroic sailors who, in the years before the Trojan War, accompanied Jason to Colchis in his quest to find the Golden Fleece. The Argonauts name comes from the sailors’ ship, the Argo.

If Zak goes back to the original story and doesn’t remake the 1963 film; I will be quite interested in seeing what sort of picture he will bring us. I have seen two films based on this fable, but still need to read the source material for my own good. I will start scouring used bookstores stat.

Giants, Hydra and Harpies will always well up excitement within me; I enjoy mythical beasts of all sorts and love to see them in film. Harpies in particular need more work, and I am glad to see that the winged wretches will be employed anew!

No word yet on when we can expect to see this picture in the theaters; but we will be sure to keep you up to speed.

  1. Really looking forward to this one. Jason & The Argonauts is a fantastic tale just made for special effects. I really hope Atalanta the huntress is included in the crew.

  2. Write Comment here. Before you do, review these rules:
    1) Stay on topic
    2) Disagree and debate, but no insulting other commenters or the author
    3) off topic messages for the author should be emailed directly, not left as a comment.

  3. I like some of his work – I even really liked his work with Herzog on Incident At Lochness. This Argonaut movie (with all of the appropriate creatures) could be awesome. That’s what was wrong with Troy – they left out the mythical characters.

I just hope the creatures are done right!

  4. yeah you’ve got a lot of greek movies coming out, but we’ll see how many are any good. I’m betting God of War sucks like anything.

I welcome this foray into greek myths. We need more and better fantasy. I’ve been very pleased with superhero/comic crossovers. I hope we can see the same from greek myths. Quality though, not just blood and babes. Which never MAKE a movie. Zak Penn is a good start though!

  5. Funny thing to note but the Sci-Fi channel’s original movies, other then their awesome mini-series Taken, their Greek mythology movies are the ones that has given them the highest ratings.
