My Life in Ruins VS. Star Trek

Nia Vardalos Acropolis
The follow up to My Big Fat Greek wedding is taking on Starfleet Academy! We get the skinny on this show off from our friends at cinematical:

Cinematical has just been informed that Nia Vardalos’ My Life in Ruins has scheduled a May 8, 2009 release date, which, so far, puts it opposite Star Trek as the weekend’s only other wide release. And yes, we’re told it will be a wide release, and that a brand, spanky new trailer will arrive soon (pay no attention to the one leaked online earlier in the month). Produced by Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Ruins stars Nia Vardalos as she returns to her Greek roots (and to the country itself) as a tour guide who discovers her romantic side while showing a ragtag group of tourists around. Directed by Donald Petrie (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), Richard Dreyfuss and Rachel Dratch also star.

I do not see Star Trek and My Life In Ruins having the same audience, so I think this makes strategic sense. I know which film I would pick, and it involves Klingons not Greeks.

I think My Big Fat Greek Wedding was a cool Rom Com, it blew up, everyone seems to love it, and they should leave it be. They tried to milk the film already with a sitcom that bombed, so I am unsure why they have decided to make another film. Perhaps they think it is worth another shot just to see if lightning will strike twice.

What are your thoughts international friends? Do you think this film will be as big a hit as the first, or

  1. To whomever it may concern:My previous comment (as well as this one) was left by automated spamming software. I just took a look at some of the sites that it hit and I see that it seems to have left comments in inappropriate places that made the comments themselves seem pretty damn insensitive. I just wanted to clear up the fact that I never actually read any of the posts and I’m really not a horrible person – It was all done automatically by a robot that left a comment on a bunch of blog posts that contained the phrase “my life sucks”. I sincerely apologize if I offended anyone – I’m just a spammer who was trying to get links to his site.If you haven’t already, you should probably delete the original comment, along with this one.

  2. Compete with “Mama Mia” – Oh, please, give us a break.
Mama Mia was a rubbish movie …… very over-hyped ! If it competes with anything it is “Shirley Valentine” !
And someone would prefer to watch a Klingon rather than this ? Son, you need to get out of the house a little more !

  3. Glad to see Nia back on screen, she is Great! , and her new movie looks like alot of fun, something we need more of, and less of Star Trek crap that has been done and re done over a dozen times …enough already!
    GO NIA!

  4. My life in ruins will suck, I really don’t see lightning striking twice. The first movie was just magical, I am not into chick flicks but I must say I enjoyed the movie greatly. It just had good chemistry, the leading lady had a clumsy innocence that made her very believable.

The TV Sitcom was a disaster, and quite frankly hoping for a third chance is really pushing it.

  5. MLIR will only be competing against “Mamma Mia”, which is still going strong. Maybe they should get together and advertize a double-bill screening: “Not enough Greece? Stay seated for two more hours with the sing-along version of Mamma Mia!”
Meanwhile the Trekkies can grab a beer after the show and discuss the film while their partners are still in the theatre.
