Goonies 2 Still Happening?

Seems that the train of long awaited sequels has yet to show its caboose. The new rumour mill tidbit of the day says that we might yet see Goonies 2! And talk says it wont be a token sequel or direct to DVD, but a major release.

Movieweb shares the rumour from “an anonymous source”:

Warner Bros. is not only setting up a The Goonies 2 film, but it will be a theatrical tentpole release as well. Here’s a snippet from the article.

“A source at Warner Bros has since confirmed this – saying they are developing it as a major movie, but won’t share anything other than that. Nothing we didn’t already know though.”

When the start throwing around words like “tentpole” they really mean that they expect this to be a MAJOR draw for the studio and that they plan on putting a lot of attention towards it.

My kids still watch the Goonies over and over at home. It is one of their Repeat Offenders and it holds up ok. It could use an update.

Last I heard they were working on this project the rumour was a new gang of misfit kids in the town the Goonies saved calling themselves “Groonies” and little Data is all grown up working in an electronics shop. (They mispronounce Goonies because of Data’s accent) He shares stories of the Goonies adventures and it inspires the kids. Something happens that puts the original Goonies in danger and the new generation of kids have to save them.

I quite expect that they will make a new batch of kids, but I would like to see as many of the original cast making an appearance as possible. Hell, with Corey Feldman reprising his childhood roles, he could show up in this too.

The last time this project was announced it turned out to be rumour too. We will wait and see.

  1. Most if not all boys dream of having adventures like that. I’d even think alot of cool girls also dream the same. I’m 32 now and still have dreams of unbelievable adventures.

Saying all this I feel a sequel would do the origional no justice no matter how much I’d love to see the old gang together again. Movie writers and directors don’t have the drive to use their imagination. Examples Transformers film, Alien Vs Preditor, and so on. So leave it as the great classic it is.

  2. for many years the debate and rumor of a sequel has been floating around. Many are up in the air about it. Although I am madly in love with the original and curious and eager to see a sequel, I am against it and hope it does not get made. It is very rare for sequels to be as good as the original, often times sequels are horrible and tarnish the original a bit. I sometimes cringe when i think of the NeverEnding Story (3 total), Nightmare on Elm Street, Lost Boys (3 total), Beverly Hills Cop (3 or 4), the list goes on.

Even remakes are tricky too, often times they’re not the same either, the Parent Trap for example, cute but lost some of the essense of the original. Unfortunately 2 of the original cast will not be in the sequel/remake (Ma Fratelli and Sloth).

  3. I saw the 1st goonies and it was good so when the 2nd one comes out hopefully it will have the same people I hope because I don’t think it would be good if it had other people in it.

  4. Rather see a bunch of new kids take over the roles, I think the premise would be funnier if all the original kids were grown up, dealing with the stress that comes with work and family, and still getting dragged into these unbelievable Goonie adventures against their will.

If it is a bunch of new kids, I’d rather they just called this a remake instead of a sequel.

  5. Personally I am all for this. I still run with a tight group of friends who have been together since we where kids. I mean there is like 6 of us, and we pretty much stick together.

So; Goonies was a big thing for us. Sligtly younger then the characters in the original film, but close enough to relate.

We still consider ourselves a gang like the Goonies, but now in our 30’s. So yes I think seeing the gang back together in their 30’s (and a bit older) could be cool.

It lets us know that even that we are older and have different responsibilities, we can still find adventure and act like a kid. We need more of that in my opinon and I welcome the sequle.

Of course my whole argument is crap if this will be based on Mike’s kid and his group of friends.

  6. NOT NOT NOT a good idea…I mean whats the point? Can’t we just have one-off films that were great? All it will do is associate itself with the old Goonies film and make it less of a great nostalgic film.

Here’s a hint, try RE-RELEASING Goonies if you want to catch an entirely new audience. There will be too much political correctness in a new one and no Truffle Shuffle.
