YouTube offers Screening Room to Independent Filmmakers

YouTube has decided to expand its “video to the masses” philosophy launching a new “screening room” service that will be aimed at independent filmmakers.

Yahoo’s caves told me:

Struggling filmmakers already use YouTube to kick-start viral marketing campaigns. The new feature, which debuts Wednesday, gives them an easy-to-find home — and makes them partners in drawing new ad revenue.”Hopefully as they see thousands of people watching their films, it’s going to be a very eye-opening experience,” said Sara Pollack, YouTube’s film and animation manager.

If anyone was to do this, Youtube is it. Now that they are owned by Google (who will eventually own everything) they have the resources to do just about anything they want. (Though I hear they are backing out of the hostile takeover of feminine hygiene products)

Also, this will give a valid hosting service for clips longer than the allotted 10 minutes that the average joe gets.

Will this change the independent Filmmakers industry or simply flood it with far too much to choose from without that enduring stage of “getting noticed” and dilute it?

  1. @Jeremy,

The best thing about the web is the democratization of creativity. Besides, I’ve got news for you, 99% of most indie film sucked already. That’s why they’re indie.

  2. I just wonder if there will be a glut of so called “filmmakers” filling this portion of YouTube. Ever since YouTube came around and people started using Windows MovieMaker, everyone and their grandpas were “filmmakers”, diluting the quality of independent “movies” a hundred fold.

  3. Guys, please just use GOOD video share sites, like e.g. vimeo.
Same for myspace. Don’t use that shit, ok? Use virb.
Thanks. The world would be a better place.
