Stan Winston Passes On

Stan2We have sad news to bring you friends. As most of you have already heard, Stan Winston has passed at the age of 62. We get the sombre scoop from the caves of Yahoo:

Pioneering special effects and makeup artist Stan Winston, a four-time Oscar winner who transformed Arnold Schwarzenegger into “The Terminator” and brought dinosaurs to life in the “Jurassic Park” films, has died at age 62, his studio said on Monday.

Winston, whose studio’s work was on display in the high-tech armored suits worn by Robert Downey Jr. in the current superhero blockbuster “Iron Man,” died at home in Malibu, California, on Sunday surrounded by family.

Winston’s work is a who’s who of awesome special effects films that I have enjoyed throughout my life. Aliens, Predator, Jurassic Park, A.I., Lake Placid and Iron Man are among the films this man has worked on. Winston birthed a lot of awesome for us to see and his talents as a master smith will be missed by professionals and fans alike.

Our thoughts go out to his friends and family.

  1. I once got the chance to submit a question to Stan Winston. “What do you enjoy doing on your spare time?” His reply was that he enjoyed sculpting very much.

He was one of the great and will be missed.

  2. He is going to be miss for sure. He was one of the masters in Hollywood. He was what made Hollywood fun. I know some people who have meet him everyone told me he was a SUPER NICE GUY.

  3. Stan Winston was one of the people in Hollywood that I admired most. He was willing to stand up and say that practical effects could work with CGI to make things realistic and believable. He made special effects that worked and almost all of them STILL work and are STILL believable to this day, something that most effects people can’t claim.

    He will be sorely missed.
