Bernie Mac and Alec Baldwin Join Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

Bernie+MacIt looks like some well known funnymen are going to be joining Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, we get the following news from the murky caves of Yahoo:

The original cast of the animated hit “Madagascar” will be joined by new names such as Bernie Mac and Alec Baldwin in “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa,” which is scheduled for a November 7 release.

In the new story, Alex, Marty, Melman and their fellow zoo refugees find themselves marooned in Madagascar. They make it to Africa, where they encounter species of their own kind for the first time. Despite underwhelming reviews, “Madagascar” grossed over $193 million at the North American box office.

I am a fan of Bernie Mac and Alec Baldwin. They both make me laugh like mad when involved in projects that suit their style. Sadly, I don’t think Madagascar 2 will be one of those projects. Animated features are seldom able to capture the fire that a comedic actor can bring when they play themselves.

I am not a fan of the first Madagascar; because I haven’t seen it. For those of you that enjoyed the first film, what are your thoughts on the casting news?

  1. The first film really grew on me. First time I saw it, I shrugged it off as another routine kids flick, but (because I have two children) I saw it about 300 more times, and every time I saw it, I laughed harder. This is due to one of two things:

    1) Multiple exposures allowed me to drop my dismissive assumptions about the film and finally see it objectively

    2) Multiple exposures lowered my IQ appreciably, until I was finally able to connect with sub-par material on its own level

Either way, I’m looking forward to the sequel. As for this casting news, it’s really hard to care one way or another. I’ve never understood the point of casting high-profile actors in animated films. At best it adds nothing that any talented voice actor couldn’t pull off, and at worst it simply draws you out of the film. “Hey… that’s Ross from ‘Friends!'”
