Youth in Revolt

YirWe have been made aware of a nifty project called Youth In Revolt, thanks to our good friends over at comingsoon:

Steve Buscemi, Ray Liotta, Jean Smart and M. Emmet Walsh have joined Michael Cera in Youth in Revolt, the Miguel Arteta-directed comedy for Dimension Films, says Variety. The film is based on the C.D. Payne novel, which was adapted by Gustin Nash, Arteta and Cera. David Permut is producing, and Steve Longi is co-producing with Miranda Freiberg.

Cera plays teenager Nick Twisp, who meets the girl of his dreams on a family vacation and destroys the trip trying to be with her. Buscemi will play his father.

Good, sweet; gracious. This magical cast is able to create a myriad of hilarious possibilities. M. Emmet Walsh was in The Jerk. The Jerk. ….and he was fucking fantastic. To see him work with this cast is a treat, and I couldn’t make my excitement any more apparent.

“Youth In Revolt” is a title akin to a propaganda piece, it is a title of action.

Youth Gone Wild by Skid Row needs to be played in this film, for real.

I am interested in this book; if any of you have read it – please share your thoughts with us. Also, what do you guys think of the cast?

  1. Commerce Meadows is definately the trailer park. As a matter of fact it is 13 Meadows Circle because I used to live there and my son saw the movie last night and txt me after getting out. They cut down the tree in front of the drive-way I planted, but the rock was placed there by my sisters exboyfriend. I have a picture of my kids in front of that trailer.

  2. Love the book. I live in Ukiah and was alittle disappointed that they are filming in MI. I also have family in Ann Arbor and they have told me before how the areas are simular though. Most of the references are pretty close, except for names of Teachers and so on, but it’s fun reading a book that is about the area that you live in.

  3. I have been anticipating this movie to come out for way to long!! Read the book 5 years ago and till this day whenever I come across it on my book shelf I flip to a random page and instantaneously start to laugh.

  4. Greatest book ever. I read this while I was in the Bay Area, experiencing all the things Nick, Lefty, and everyone actually experienced. Such a great book… even J.D. Salinger could have learned a few tricks from C.D. Payne.

    Can’t wait for the movie.

  5. I just got out of the screening of the movie and I have to say that it was absolutely hilarious! I was laughing hysterically most of the movie. Michael Cera, as always, was superb in this role. All-star cast makes this movie a must see!

  6. Jeff Starr- I saw your car while it was being filmed for the movie. It was put inside the house where they were shooting in Ferndale. They had to remove the engine and trans to lessen the weight. They placed a fake intake and air cleaner under the hood. It was interesting to see how they had to take out part of the house to get the car in.

I can’t believe there has not been a trailer released yet for this movie.

  7. I am interested to see whether or not they are going to use the part of the book in which Nick Twisp gives Lefty a blow job in the film. Personally, I think its a bad idea, mostly because I think that Michael Cera is effing gorgeous.

  8. They filmed the movie in my home town and I got wasted with Justin Long. So the movie is going to be AWESOME. I would give you more details but I don’t remember much else. I know I talked to Drew Barrymore. And a week later they “broke up” weird.

  9. I just read the book and it was totally hilarious and really crazy,in a good way. I think Michael would be perfect and im stoked for the movie. Some parts of the book i really dont get how theyll put into a movie, but im sure it will be great. Who’s playing Sheeni?

  10. True story – we sold our ’74 Nova to the producers of Youth In Revolt to be used in the movie. We thought they were liars – the car was listed on craigslist, and these two guys showed up saying that they wanted to use it in a movie. We (my wife and I) ended up selling the car to them (it took forever – they were looking for the “right” car). Just a few weeks ago we got a letter from some production company that said “Filming for Youth in Revolt has wrapped – please forward any unpayed invoices to:” – we had no idea that they were really telling us the truth, let alone that the movie would a “legit” Hollywood release. We can’t wait to see the old Nova (which used to belong to my fatheri-in-law) on the big screen.

  12. This movie is going to be fucking sweet. The books were the best time I ever had reading anything. All the cast for this movie are great actors and I’ve been looking forward to seeing this movie for years. If it’s half as funny as the books people are going to piss themselves.

  13. (Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so) My niece was an extra in the movie this week. She’s a young teacher from Ypsi who answered the casting call with a friend. (The friend didn’t get chosen.) She heard about it at the last minute and took a shower, threw clothes on, pulled her hair up in a clip and ran off to Madison Hts. to try out. She filmed in Ann Arbor Monday thru Friday this past week and in spite of the heat, had a ball. They had to be on set from 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily. She said in spite of the tedium, it was also exciting and she’d love to do it again.

  14. Man, totally wish I wouldn’t have missed out on being an extra for this one. I’ve been checking out michiganextras.net to try to stay on top of who is filming and casting calls. Also, ran into Cera downtown Ann Arbor and he was super nice

  15. I got to work with this movie, and I have to say I liked all of them. Nick the location scout, Colleen, Miguel Arteta, and all of the crew were always having a good time, even the EMS guys were laughing all day. Got to talk to Michael Cera a couple times, and a few of the other actors. I can’t wait for the movie to come out.

  16. Michael Cera went and got his OWN starbucks run this morning. That was pretty crazy seeing him order it himself; I guess he’s not a diva yet like every other movie star. I work on the street they are filiming, right across from the one they are blowing up on First Street in Downtown Ann Arbor…needless to say I have the week off :)

PS They are driving a car in and blowing it up today…WEDNESDAY, not Friday.

Can’t wait to see the movie!!

  17. mackenzie-

Youth and Revolt crew where filing down our road and my sis and her friend met micheal cera he said hi to them i wish i was there since we live right down the road where they where filming (aka, south lyon) there where guards and ofcoarse we got pulled over i wish they could come back i would LOVE to meet a movie star and my friend hung out with every single one and met everyone she said she wished i was there it was a blast I;m so getting the book and seeing the movie!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Michael Cera did a short shoot today @ W. Liberty St. & S.1st St. in Ann Arbor & then he left shortly after driving his self in a blue Toyota. Very nice fella!

Talked to the set crew as they are still buying pain from us @ GNE PAINT they are wrapping up production and heading back to Texas where most of the set crew lives. There is a set stuido in Madison Heights where they are shooting some small extra scenes.

  22. I was at summer schools n got pics of the hazel park hs sign n the fake cop cars at my school which is Brighton highschool the security guard said it was youth in revolt!! Weird theyre using my classrooms that I was in two months ago

  23. i was just down there and talked to one of the people thats working there and they said they are doing some extra shotsof the outside al the actors went home last week except for michael cera he had to redo a couple scenes but hes done so thats a wrap.

  24. im really pissed about this.

the book is way to long to make a decent movie out of it, and wtf, michael cera is the wrong person to be playing nick.
he’s not even close to looking 14, and from his previous work, he has no potential to play him. the only logical explanation for casting him was for publicity.
    oh well.
another good book/bad movie remake i suppose.

  25. i hear they are suppose to do some more shooting nxt week back on leroy but up a block or two my friend said they were setting up again in a house ill get the adress probably wont need to theyll have everything barricated again so it will be easy to find.

  26. We were at the filming of this movie last night. It was in Shelby Township, MI. Right in our backyard. We stuck around and watched a few scenes and then proceeded to get Fred Willard, Michael Cera, Adhir Kalyan and Miguel Arteta’s autograph! It was pretty amazing, since nothing happens in Shelby Township. The scenes included the truck running out of gas and they filmed it on Hamlin Road and used the AA Auto parts for other scenes! Pretty cool. Can’t wait to see the movie!

  27. haha That security guard sucked! I heard him saying some really rude comments like “i dont know why people find this so facinating” .. what a tool…I was there last night until midnight in the rain. I met Ray Liotta, he took a pic with me and signed my “youth in revolt” book. he was excited that I had the book. Mike and Jean were walking around but they were busy. I’m going there again today in hopes to meet Mike.

  28. my mom saidshe was there again today and jean smart came out of the house then came across the street and everybody was getting their picture with her everybody was really nice there except for this security guard short guy she said he had major problems didnt seem to like his job much other than that she had fun.

  29. ok so after I saw your message last night I went there, and they were just packing up and I asked someone if they would be there tomorrow and he said yes. and i also heard they will be filming in michigan until august 1st. So I will be there when I get off work tonight at 7:30. I am excited!

  30. I have no idea but my brother said his girlfriend got her picture taken with Ray Liota. My mom wished she had stayed a little bit longer she had gone with me to see them filming.

  31. Filming wll be in Ann Arbor this week. Not sure where in AA. CD Payne left town this morning to head back to San Fran, wine country, where he lives.

  32. I live 3 doors down we go back and forth watching it, about 1pm they were shooting right infront of my house it was so sweet, now i really cant wait to see the movie, just to see my block.

  33. Thank you so much Mary Jo!
I actually ended up finding it and came home and saw that you had posted where it was haha
It was absolutely amazing…I got to watch a scene being shot and then I looked to my right and there was the gorgeous Michael Cera!!
He’s exactly the same in person as he is in movies :]]

  34. i was on the set today for like 25mins it was awesome!
i met michael too…i think he thought i was weird..rofl
    o well
thanks to the people who let us know where it was!

  35. They are filming as I type on Leroy in Ferndale which is 3 blocks South of 9 mile road and west of Woodward… they are using a good friend of mine’s house.

  36. Can anyone tell me approximately where they are filimg?
I really just want to see a movie set lol
I’m not from the Ferndale area so I don’t know where downtown Ferndale is :[

  37. They are filming by my house today and tomorrow… near downtown Ferndale. I walked over and watched for awhile. Michael Cera and Fred Willard were there, didnt recognize the others.

My family and I were in TC during the last week of June. We were staying at the Fairfield Inn off of 31(by Sam’s Club). Some of the crew from the film and cast members (Emmet Walsh, Justin Long, etc) were staying there for the week. Their rooms were across the hall from ours. We ran into them by the elevators and in the hotel dining area. They were all very personable people.

  39. They all were there in Frankfort, MI

We saw them eat at THE FUSION RESTAURANT and TALI BISTRO.

They hung out there and they were so cool.

Everyone was like, “look isn’t that the Apple MAC guy”?

I can’t wait to see Youth in Revolt.

    FRANKFORT ROCKS!!!

  40. JT

Excellent cast for a comedy! It was indeed a little chaotic here in Commerce Meadows (hence Commerce Township but with a Wixom mailing address>clarification :o)
Someone connected to the movie just contacted a photo artist friend of mine, Suzanne Johnson, to possibly buy some of her work. That’d be cool to see it the movie!
Can’t wait to check this movie out….Buscemi rocks! In the top five for best character actors ever in my opinion.

  41. I was just up at Lake Leelanau near Traverse City and they were filming while we were camping there. I got to see the set and took lots of pics. A lot of chaos and days and days of filming for what will probably be in 5 – 10 min of the movie. They are filming all over MI, but in the movie it is being portrayed as being in CA. Hmmmmmm wonder how that can look the same as the trees, plants etc are VERY different. Anyway…it was different.

  42. they just shot a scene vlose to were i live. its in leelanau county just north of Traverse City. i went out to the trailer park where they were filming. i stood within 10 feet of where they were acting it out. it was so tight to see them all up close. and yeah i met Michael Cera too! they renamed the trailer park Rustless Axles Trailer Park for the film. Pretty tight!

  43. Yea, they are now here in Traverse City. I was sitting in a coffee shop typing and I looked up and Micheal Cera was ordering a Sandwich. Of course I didn’t read about the movie until after my encounter and just assumed he was just a really cute look alike. I guess not…….I blew my chance lol.

  44. (Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so) We camp at lake leelanau RV park and they have been filming all week up there. we’ve met Emmet Walsh and Justin Long. We have lots of pictures of the sets being built. The trailers are two over from ours so we can see everything. Jean Smart is coming in today.

  45. They were filming at lake leelanau RV park for the past couple days… I saw Michael cera and Justin long. And got some good pictures… It was awesome watching a movie being made…

  46. Justin Long was in my office today, as well. He was really cool. Actually, he was a lot like the characters he plays; what you see is what you get. Very, very cool guy; really down to earth. Zach Galafanakis was in on Friday, the 20th, as well. Between Granholm’s filming rebates, and Michael Moore’s/Bruce Willis’/Jeff Daniels’ connections with Northern Michigan, we may see many more celbrities in our neck of the woods. Word on the street is that a Steven King adaptation is being filmed up here, as well.

  55. (Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so)

Right here in our little vacation town of Frankfort, MI; filming. Too cute. You could not have picked a cuter town, although it does not look like Ukiah. The lighthouse, Lake Michigan and Betsie Bay in the background, but what the heck; the cute little bakery. Our summer haven and very special cottage home has been discovered.

  56. And it was definitly in Wixom, then Detroit at Marygrove College, then Rochester, and then on to the studio, then to Traverse City. I talked to the assistant director, got to be on set.

  57. They are in studio for the next couple of days, wrapped in Rochester tonight, and will go to Traverse City in a few days! This movie is awesome so far!

  58. anybody got anymore details as to where they are now or going? or better yet, where their production office is? i just went to the trailer park today (june 10th) and it looks as though they had already moved on to their next location :( any info would really help. i’m a film student trying to get on the crew so… yeah, thanx

  59. I live in Commerce Meadows and I am glad they are on they’re way to Traverse City. This mobile home park for a week was a mad place to live. Yea it was exciting in the beginning but when the news got out it was crazy. They filmed until 3 am this morning. They were in Milford Friday filming at the church next to the post office And right in front of the police station. Where they are headed after that is anyones guess. I heard that they were filming the high school scenes at Madison Heights high school after school is out.

  60. The name of the park is definitely Commerce Meadows and it’s for sure in Wixom michigan.. I’m in the park next door Stratford Villa and my little sister was walking around commerce meadows and is flipping out because she got Michael Cera’s autograph.. and if you go next door to uptown market.. all they’re trailers and the crew is camped out in the parking lot

  61. My brother saw a camera truck tracking a car down Milford road, most likely for this movie because the car wasn’t new. The police had the road blocked off, too.

  62. (Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so).

Yes this movie is being filmed in Aan Arbor-Wixom and Royal Oak. My company (GNE PAINT HAZEL PARK) has sold all the painting materials to do the sets, this is a great thing for Michigan companies. You will see lots of movies filmed here in the next year now that Granholm has made it easy for movie companies to shoot here and be affordable.

  63. They are filming right now in Wixom, MI in a huge trailer park at the corner of Wixom rd and Glengary. The whole neighbor hood is buzzing. The local gossip is that Cuba Gooding Jr. has been seen. They have been here for a week now. When would this hit the theatre’s since they are filming right now? June 1, 2008.

  64. They are filming this in the trailerpark around the block from me, and then when I went to my place in Ann Arbor for the weekend and they were filming at the end of the block from my place there. This movie is stalking me!!!

  65. This movie sounds so good i want to see it so bad. they are filming it in my trailer park and i drive by the set it is so cool. It looks like it is going to be good and it sound like it too. can’t wait!!

  66. HOLY CRAP I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!
i cannot even tell you how excited i am about this movie.
the sequel to this book was even good (i think it was called revolting youth)

so good. congrats to CD Payne!

and congrats on michael cera. BEST CASTING EVER

  67. A couple days ago I learned that they are filming this movie in Ann Arbor, MI and Royal Oak, MI which is a quick drive from my house. This sparked my interest in the movie and I bought the book and am currently 2/3 through and I have to say its one of my favorite books i’ve read in recent memory. The book is very vulgar and can be disturbing at times so I wonder if they will keep it’s edge or tone it down, this will definetley be a Michael Cera that we havnt seen.

  68. I can not wait for this movie to be made. The casting is so perfect, besides the fact that Nick Twisp is supposed to be 14. I cant wait to see what Cera does with the charecter. If you all havent read the book, you definantly should. Its full of hilarious awkward moments and ridiculous characters.

BTW, Nick Twisp is cross dressing for the latter 1/3 of the book, and im not sure how they will make that look believable.
