‘Friday the 13th’ remake Gets New Director

Jason-Vorhees-NewFor those that thought the remake was just a rumor, think again. Although, we haven’t heard of any recent news in the past few weeks about the remake that is being made under Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes production company, it doesn’t mean we have seen the last of the infamous hockey-masked killer. It turns out that Jonathan Liebesman is out as the director, and a new director is currently in negotiations to direct the equally much anticipated and much dreaded remake.

Our good friends at Filmjunk give us this:

Now it looks like the remake is finally back on track, with a new director in negotiations. Unfortunately, it’s Marcus Nispel (Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, Pathfinder) not someone I hold in a particularly high regard, although he may turn out to be an improvement on Liebesman. Production is expected to begin this winter, possibly with a release date of mid-2008 in mind.

This news does not surprise me, considering Nispel directed the box office success ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ remake for Platinum Dunes. Before anyone groans in disappointment, may I remind you what Jonathan Liebesman directed before being booted as director for the new remake? He directed ‘Darkness Falls.’ Yup…the PG-13 film about a killer tooth fairy. To be quite honest, the TCM remake has actually grown on me and I personally didn’t think Marcus Nispel did a bad job. The visuals and cinematography were great and I think he is most likely the better choice out of the two directors.

So what do you think? Are you excited about being able to go back to Camp Crystal Lake, or would you rather just boycott the idea of this remake?

  1. I love the Friday the 13th films. Most critics of these films just don’t like the slasher genre. Friday the 13th is one of the best of it’s kind. There are only a few that are better; namely The Prowler & Maniac just to name two. If you like true slasher films, don’t listen to the haters – make sure you watch Friday the 13th part one through eight. You will have a ball.

  2. I actually saw most of the majority of this film being filmed its going to be alot more fast paced than the old Jason kinda of what they have been doing will Zombies, I can tell you this though this will not be the last remake of Jason. Spoiler Alert There will be a second movie.

  3. (Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so)Seen some of the filming in bastrop texas. Going to be crazy!!!!

  4. Serena, I like ya, you’re the best, but, I gotta throw down the gauntlet on you with this one.

    May I remind you…

Jonathan Liebesman’s previous film wasn’t Darkness Falls, but the Platinum Dunes produced “Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Beginnng” which was loads of blood (not bad) mildly interesting on how Leatherface/Hewitt family got their start, and then it’s ho hum, a bottle of blood rum.

And, as much as I was disappointed in ‘Falls”, the studio had a big hand in mangling up that pic for a PG-13, not Jonathan Liebesman alone.

  5. I have only seen Parts I, VII, VIII, IX, X, and Freddy vs. Jason. Can’t argue with the choice of director, brought Leatherface back as one sick b*tch!

For the record, I like Darkness Falls. *ducking from oncoming tomatoes!*

  6. I want to see a trailer before I decide if this would be good or not. But the idea sounds great for horror and slasher fans. I hope it just isnt a snooze fest like other horror movies I seen in the past few years. They should go for an NC-17 rating that would bring lots of ppl to the Box Office. It work for me.

  7. to be honest friday the 13th is more well known purely for its reputation and the jason character then it is for any quality films.

the films are just not very good. they have there moments but put the first friday the 13th up against say halloween or texas chain saw and there is no comparison.

It is deserving of its place in horror lore but at the end of the day as i said the films are just not very good…

except for part 6 which is fucking great…the james bond piss take opening is genius.

and as much as hockey mask jason is a great looking slasher and definitely a horror icon i also have a soft spot for sackhead jason in part 2….part 2 has its good stuff in it and sackhead jason is a scary looking fucker.

what I am trying to get at is they can really do whatever the fuck they want with the film because the original is just not that great.

although it is annoying they are going with jason and not pamela vorhees as that is the one true great thing outside of some great gore effects friday the 13th has for it..the last half hour..

    anyway..i am just rambling

  8. To tell you the truth, I have NEVER seen either Friday the 13th or Friday the 13th part two. I know that may sound funny coming from someone who professes to be a big horror movie fanatic, but what can I say? As far as a remake goes, I have no idea HOW I feel about it. I have nothing tying me to the original, but at the same time I don’t know that this needs to happen. Hell now I HAVE to see the original just so I will have something to compare it to.
